A snapshot from Queen Mary's 'Vacation from Hell', at least her husband King George V and his sister (Vic)Toria did not make it easy for her during this trip. Toria was asked to join her brother and sister-inlaw just after the death of her mother Queen Alexandra earlier that year (1925) to give her a 'time-out'. What started as a nice gesture became a complete fiasco, because 'Toria and Georgie' started their old teasing habits again like the did during their childhood as Queen Mary's Wales cousins. There was no art in the world that could save Queen Mary from their childish behaviour.

This has always been one of my favourite pictures, the ladies are so well dressed. Was it a special occasion does anyone know? Louise particularly looks very stylish.

One of my favourite pictures ever! Anyway I know we where discussing the possible date of this photo. I visited Sandringham last week and they record this photo as being taken in 1895 in the Sandingham conservatory (now demolished!!! >:( >:()!!!

You're killing me with these awesome photos lately Eddie!  :-*

I had seen an individual 'head shot' from this sitting of Alexandra but had no idea it was part of a shoot with Victoria as well.

It's a pleasure to share them with you Courtney!!  :-* :-*

They could be sisters couldn't they?? Did Alexandra have a favourite daughter do you think? I've always thought she loved Eddy & George the best!

I would say that her relationship with Victoria was closer than that of the other girls what with Victoria remaining at home. I've always had the impression that she favored the boys as well. At least those are the letters that are most frequently published--one really gets the sense of her affection for them. Of course, they were away much more often than the girls (ship & school) so perhaps that contributed to it.

Granted Queen Alexandra is wearing a corset, but is her figure not amazing for a lady of her age and following the birth of six children!?

I've always loved this photo too, even though the mood of everyone seems quite sombre in it.

So true Grace! I wonder if the photo was taken at Sandringham as I recall seeing included in book about Sandringham years ago, unless it was just showing who's who. I think you are right Margot. Maybe Christmas time perhaps, or just a photo opportunity to include Charles (interesting to think he lived on until 1957- would love to of heard his memories!)...Toria looks dressed for winter, or did they wear muffs in summer too I wonder? Gloves most likely..

I've just seen that the photo was posted (apparently for the  first time) in a magazine in  Jan 25 1896--right before Albert/George VI's christening. Perhaps everyone was gathered for that and he just wasn't in the photo? The photo was taken at Sandringham by Downey.

Could you tell us who all the people in the picture are?

I'm not absolutely certain that the man standing on the right is Carl/Haakon, as he doesn't look tall enough. Unless everyone else in the back row in standing on something, he looks only a couple of inches taller than Edward VII, who was about 5ft 7. I'm not sure how tall Haakon actually was, but in most pictures he towers over everybody. His brother Christian X was 6ft 6 and the tallest king in the world in his day, so I'm guessing that Haakon was about 6ft 4 or 5.

No, it's Charles/Haakon. CH is correct in her IDs. He was very tall but for symmetry, I wouldn't be surprised if those in the back weren't standing on something. Plus, he looks a little angled--like he's leaning ever so slightly forward and not standing up perfectly straight.

I've just read in "Royal Cabinet Portraits of the Victorian Era" that Toria wanted to marry a german prince???
Who could that have been?
I don't think her mother Queen Alexandra would have allowed that..
