Yes none of them inherited Alexandras legendary beauty.

I've seen lots of different photos of the girls though and they look simply stunning in some of them. I think they were all very pretty just not beautiful like Alexandra.

We've discussed Toria's romantic attachments before--most specifically Lord Roseberry. So I was looking through an old newspaper archive last night and saw an article abotu Lord Roseberry and a royal princess and whether an engagment might be announced. Was rather suprised that the paper opined that he may be in the running to marry the widowed Duchess of Albany! Wonder if there was a mix-up when the rumors were flying, with Toria being unmarried for so long, it was assumed that she wouldn't be the object of a possible engagement?

Well...quite a few do.  :) and yes Alexandra was quite a hard act to follow. It is not until Marina, Duchess of Kent that we find another fashionable beauty from the House of Glucksborg.  :D

I think so too--certainly an unfulfilled one.  :(  It would've been one thing if she was content to be at her mother's side all those years but most stories don't bear this out. Plus to be surrounded by people decades older than you and isolated with them in the country after Bertie's death....

Yes...there was some talk about her wanting to marry Lord Roseberry. It was rumoured to be forbidden. She had reason to be bitter, as her cousin Princess Dagmar of Denmark and later Princess Patrisha of Connaught was allowed to marry commoners...She felt the frustration intensely unlike another of her cousin Olga of Hannover, who also remained at her mother's side and unmarried.

Hello :)

I was wondering. Why is is that Toria chose to move to Buckinghamshire and not stay in Norfolk after her mothers death? Theirs loads of lovely houses in Norfolk. Surely she would have peferred to have been closer to her brother at Sandringham and Maud at Appleton House? and no doubt she had friends on the estate she had grown up in. I think it's interesting.  :)

Maybe she just wanted a complete change? I think she was very complex person (sadly she seems to be remembered for her sharp tongue the most).

There's a lovely story in Xenia's bio (whom she was so supportive of) that she was invited by a friend of Xenias grandson whether she would like to go on a cycle ride, to which she gracefully excepted. Not knowing her identity he showed her all over the estate. Afterwards they had a photo taken. It was only years later that he realised who she was and that he had shown her around the estate she had grown up in and she never said a word!! Isn't that lovely?? Sorry i've not told the story very well but you get the general idea :D

My favourite picture of Toria. So stylish. The hat is just brilliant!!

EDIT: Interestingly my sister had a similiar hat and wore it to Wimbledon one year and we managed to spot her on television as a result   :D :D

Thank you royal_netherlands! Another great hat  ;D and Mays too!!

Yes I think Maud was her favourite sister. All though they were all close growing up it would appear Louise, after her marriage, sort of distanced herself at times. If that's fair to say?

The first one is one of my all time favourites :) Thank you Royal_netherlands. Such a lovely group photo, they all look so smart, are they in mourning??

Pity Louise isn't in the second one.  :)

So glad the thread on TORIA has been bumped up!  :D

That is a fair thing to say, I think Eddieboy, and thank you for the lovely little story also.

Louise in the main really did distance herself from the family after she married and had her children.  The reason is anyone's guess but I'd say she found her mother and father overwhelming (in different ways) and simply wanted to do her own thing.

Alix in particular was said to be deeply hurt that Louise hardly ever let her children stay with her and Bertie, which of course happened frequently with George's and later Maud's children.

I think Louise was the least close to any of her family.

Thank you Grace! Toria is yet another one that fascinates me, and she is a Wales after all!  :D

I think your points on Louise are accurate. It must have been difficult not to find both parents a little trying!
I get the impression Louise preferred a quieter life!

I think George V and Torias' relationship was rather touching. After her death he wrote "No one ever had a sister like her"

I am still interested to know why Toria moved to Coppins.  :)
