I recently had the great fortune of acquiring "Little Mother of Russia" and I've been skimming through it. For her official entry into St. Petersburg, Dagmar is said to be wearing "the Russian national dress - a gold-embroidered blue sarafan with the traditional half-moon-shaped headdress, the Kokoshnik, in blue silk studded with diamonds." Then for when she was received into the Orthodox Church, "a white satin dress... In a blue velvet train edged with pearls... A Kokoshnik studded with precious gems..." Pages 38 and 39

Does anyone have any photos of her on these days? I would love to see them.

I've seen photos from that day labelled Tsarskoe Selo.

I don't know of any 1860s/1870s photos of Maria Feodorovna wearing a kokoshnik or a court dress, which is a little surprising IMO.

From what I remember reading in "Little Mother of Russia" and other books the schedule of Maria Feodorovna's arrival was jam packed with ceremonies and events. They had very little time to themselves and when they did it was mainly to refresh themselves.

I could be wrong but I would be very surprised if there were any photos taken during that time, especially since it took so long. I have seen a painting of her arrival with Maria Alexandrovna in a carriage but they were wearing the fashion of the period, not Russian national costume.

According to the Historical State Museum (Moscow) this is a court dress of Maria Feodorovna from the 1860s.

I don't recall any pictures of her wearing them though

Guys, I don't know whether this had been discussed before or not, but I'd like to hear your opnion -- do you think that this photo of Joy was actually taken at Tobolsk? Is there any caption on regarding the Joy's photo? Is that photo cropped?

I am asking since if you compare the door in the background, it look so similar to the actual doors of the Governor's mansion at Tobolsk.

For the comparasion, see:

( On the balcony you can see the Empress with an umbrella as well).

Any clue in which palace and room this was taken? (It was captioned 'Alexander Palace')

Does anyone know when, where and on what occasion these photos were taken? It seems they are shot at the same time.

The bottom one was presumably taken in Germany, since it is captioned in German. That, and the photo of Nicholas, were certainly taken outside Russia, since they are in civilian clothes (as Russian officers, they always wore uniform in Russia). I would hazard a guess that all the pictures were taken on a visit to Darmstadt.

The caption on the bottom picture could give the date as 1895, but it isn't complete. It might be 1896, 1898 or 1903, but not 1905, since Sergei was killed on 17 February 1905.

The bottom one says Grand Duke Serge of Russia (in German) anf gives his death date, so it's not when or where it was taken.
But I think you are right that they were taken outside Russia most probably in early 1900s. I know there are several versions of the picture of the Hessian sisters.

Could they have been taken in Darmstadt during the wedding of Princess Alice of Battenberg and Prince Andrew of Greece? I'm just thinking when all four sisters, Nicholas and GD Sergei were abroad together.
