during the 18th century romania went through a lot of changes of government. the turks were practically offering the romanian throne to the highest bidder. the ghika family was of greek origin indeed and it was one of the families that held that throne for more than one generation... i believe a ghika was the last ruler of wallachia before it united with moldova to form romania... he was a liberal ruler and pretty much ok but didn't do much for the country...

there are lot of princes and princesses who descend from those families of greeks who ruled romania, ghika is one of them :)

I open this thread and invite you to discuss this wealthy, powerful and depraved Hungarian family. As many will know, its most famous member was Countess Erzsebet Báthori (1560-1614), the most prolific serial killer of our era, but nearly all of this family's members had their own obscure secrets and I'd like to discuss about them!

Another member of this depraved family:

* Klara Báthori (1523-1579): Paternal aunt of Erzsebet, rumour has it that she lost her virginity aged twelve with her brother, Miklós. When she was 13 she married Istvan Drugeth de Homonna, of whom she became a widow aged 17. Soon after she gave birth to their only son, who died as a teenager. She was then forced to marry a man she hated, Antal Losonczy, with whom she had five children, though it is doubted that any of them were really his! Fed up of Antal she had him murdered and married her lover András Grozny, of whom she was expecting a child, András, born in 1555. Her husband, an alcoholic who was an addict to brothels, was killed in a fight for a prostitute in 1561. A month later she married Baltzer Kerensczy, a fifteen-year old bourgeoise. Some years later she had him murdered to inherit his wealth and took her own son, Andras Grzony, as her new lover. With him she had her last child, and grandson at the same time, when she was 47. She was openly bisexual and a sadomasochist. She died with her son-olver András killed by the Turks.

So Klara and her son were lovers... There was something wrong with that family.

There was... certainly!

Klara was also Erzsebet's lover, and she seduced her when Erzsebet was about 11 or so and Klara was 48!!!

Elizabeth Bathory belonged to hungarian noble family. And one of her most famous family estate "Cachtice" belonged also to Hungary (today part of Slovakia). Therefore I don't think that topic about her is suitable for Balkan Royal Families.
Maybe Mediatized Noble Families would be more suitable.

Hello,

My name is Etta and my greatgrandmother of my fathersite was Lucie Pulcherie Argyropoulo, Her mothers name was Pulcherie Cantacuzene Pashcano.

They were all relatives of Lucia Princess zu Sayn Wittgenstein-Berleburg.

When my father was very little he and his mother (my grandmother) called Aina visited often Schloss Waldenburg in Sachsen. In her young days she and her mother visited her relatives in Jassy (Romania)

Does any one have information about the family Argyropoulo or Cantacuzene are they still alive and how to contact them

thank you very much  Etta

Dear Etta,  TYou might want to read two books "Revolutionary Days" and "My life here and there". They were written by Princess Cantacuzene. She was an Americain who married prince Michael Cantacuzene. They had three children - Michael, Bertha and Ida. They came to USA at the time of the revolution. I understand that some of her descendants live in Florida. I hope I helped. Amelia

hi etta , if you can read French , Grandes Familles de Grece fully explores both these families. Researched  by Mihail Sturdza and published by Chez l' auteur, Paris. The modern family of Prince Cantacuzene live in Paris but can
not legitimate their descent from the Byzntine Emperors.
However the Argyropoulo have  played a major role in Greek politics, for example Lucie's grandfather George A. was Grand Ban of Craiova 1809. A cousin Pss Aspasia of Greece, was the daughter of Marie A.

Alexander A born 1920 is head of the family and lives in Buenos Ayres with his wife Erika Friese. They have 3 daughters
