Maria Feodorovna was quite an interesting figure though she is not one of my favorite Romanovs. She was not as patriotic and dedicated to her new country as her mother -in-law.
she enjoyed lavish life and demanded 1000 000 roubles a year to maintain her court that was even more than the yearly budget of st.peterburgin this way she drained the country`s budget.
what is more, she treated badly her daughter-in-law, elizaveta and anna due to the fact that her mmother -in-law selected these princesses as wives for alexander and constantine.M.F. superceded empress elizaveta who was to remain in the shadow.
besides, she was quite manipulative when she wanted to get something from her son alexander. aware of the feeling of guilt that tormented her son after the death of paul, she used the death of her husband as a tool to force her son to do what she wanted. she kept paul`s bloody shirt in a special container and whenever alexander was obstinate she put this container in front of him to remind him of the role that he played in march 1801.
this makes me think that alexander was not her favorite, it was nikolay.thee have been many speculations as to who was his father.they say,it was one of the courtiers,13 years younger.it was maria feodorovna`s great love so she transfered her feelings on nikolay
