There is MEMORIES of QUEEN AMELIE of PORTUGAL by Lucien Corpechot. It has been years since I have read it, so do not how reliable it is. BUT, it is in English !

For those who can read French, I recommend the excellent bio by Laurence Catinot-Crost Amélie de Portugal, Princesse de France. I have never heard of any bio of her written in English.
Eduardo Nobre's Familia real - Album de Fotographias contains some wonderful pics of her as well as of the whole Portuguese royal family from Maria II da Gloria onward.

Nobre's book on the Portuguese royal family is fantastic indeed.  Eurohistory.com sold more than 100 copies of it, copies I fetched in Lisbon in 2003.  The photos he included were marvelous!

I also wrote a piece for The European Royal History Journal a couple of years ago regarding the Portuguese regicide of 1908.  Carlos, Luiz Fiipe and Manuel being Coburgs after all...

If you can read Portuguese, I recommend this book:

"Eu, Amélia, Última Rainha de Portugal" ("I, Amélie, Last Queen of Portugal").

BERN, Stéphane
Published by: Livraria Civilização Editora.
1st edition: 1999.
230 pages.

There is also the same book in French: "Moi, Amélie, Dernière Reine de Portugal".

And you can also read this bio about Amélie's husband, King Carlos I of Portugal:

"Charles 1er, roi de Portugal. Destin maudit d'un roi sacrifié"

Written by: Pailler, Jean.
Publish by: ATLANTICA

One of the flimsiest writers I have to read in the last decade.  No research, lots of unsubstantiated gossip, very little attention paid to accuracy.  all fluff, no substance.

how much taller Amelie is than many around her, including Manuel)

Yes, this is very funny.

Amélie had 1,86 m! Her big height was a problem to her marriage. Because of that, her parents tried to marry her with some of the Romanovs Grand Dukes, who were also very tall.
But Amélie turn to marry Carlos who was 1,75 m: almost a match.

This is one of the connections between Amélie and Ferdinand:

King Louis Philippe - Ferdinand d'Orléans - Philippe Count of Paris - Amélie of Portugal

King Louis Philippe - Clementine of Saxe-Coburg - Ferdinand of Bulgaria

Amélie's father, the Count of Paris, was a first cousin of Ferdinand of Bulgaria.

Another interesting connection is this one:

Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg - Ferdinand of Portugal - Luiz I of Portugal - Carlos of Portugal = Amélie d'Orléans

Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg - August of Saxe-Coburg - Ferdinand of Bulgaria

Hence Ferdinand of Bulgaria was also a first cousin of Amélie's father-in-law, King Luiz of Portugal.

Queen Amelie & King Carlos seem such an odd couple to me, perhaps because they were such opposites in appearance.

She seemed such a kind & pleasant sort of person. Ponsonby described her as 'witty and amusing and there was no difficulty keeping the ball rolling [in conversation]' And maybe he shared some of her affability.

Marie Mallett described him:

"He is so fat that he bounds rather than eats and his greediness is quite appalling. The gentlemen call him the Champion Liar.. "

"Fat and pink just like a prize pig….[he] eats enormously and they say he takes a good deal of exercise but the more he takes the more he eats and I should fear apoplexy at 40 but he is 32 now!"

(Marie Mallett was always VERY critical of people wasn't she? I recall she described Alix as 'cow-like' & a 'rabid German hausfrau.' I do not think she was a very pleasant person to meet!)

It may not be known to all that HM Queen Amelie and HH Pope Pius XII were the god parents of the present Duke of Braganaca, Dom Duarte Pio.

I was very astonished, when I read at Wikipedia, tha the Portugese Royal couple Queen Amelia and King Carlos had 4 children!
I thought, that they had the two sons Manuel and Luiz, because on no photo of the couple, I see a little girl!
Her name was Maria Pia, named after the Grandma,
and lived from 1907 till 1995!
Do you have any photos from this girl and her family and maybe some informations?
Thank you!

Carlos & Amélie actually had 3 children : Luiz Felipe (1887-1908), Maria Ana (born & dead in 1888) & Manuel (1889-1932). Maria Pia was Carlos's illegitimate daughter by a lady called Maria Amélia Laredò e Murça. She was later legitimated.

Thank you for the hit!
Really , in german Wikipedia, a "Maria Pia" was named as common daughter of Amelia and Carlos!

I must say, you have really a great knowledge, Agneschen!
