Grand Duke & Atruro,

If the first child is female do you think Spain will change their succession laws or do the Spanish still perfer a male heir?

They talked about the hipotesis of changing the succession law as a way to modernize the monarchy!

The succession law will be changed. Prime Minister Zapatero raised the issue as one of his pre election intiatives. However - the change to the constitution will require a general election and a referendum so they are going to leave it until the natural end of this present government. As the Principe de Asturias said yesterday there is no rush because there is his generation in between. The King also seemed to be of this opinion. When he was asked about the changes he simply said it was not important as the father was the heir not the child!

Indeed there is talk of changing the law. Should it be a male (according to today's laws), he will inherit the throne upon his father's death or abdication. If it is a girl, she will be second should Crown Princess Letizia give birth to a boy later on. If they had only daughters, the eldest will inherit the throne one day, as happened in Denmark with Queen Margarethe II. Spain has NOT a good record of Queens and female regents, let us hope that in this acse, if it is a she, it will be the other way round :)

Any names picked out for the child? Umm . . . Juan or Carlos or Alfonso for a boy? And . . . something like Maria for a girl? Anyone have any ideas?

The ancient Spanish name of PELAYO (shock and horror frankly) seems to be quite popular with don Felipe and his wife.

I don't think they will put Pelayo to their child if it was to be a boy...

Still, rumours about the baby being named Pelayo are increasing. I think the baby will be called Alfonso, maybe Fernando... If it was a daughter, maybe María or Isabel.

Juan never, Prince Lieven, because he would become Juan III and it would be a conflict, as for many Spanish monarchists, Spain already had a Juan III: Juan Carlos's father!

Maybe that is why the actual king uses the name Juan Carlos I instead of Juan III!  :o
