"Royal Romances Of Today" by Kellog Surland (1911)

Probably my favorite AN anecdote to date; there were several laughs in that one for me!

Yesterday, I was reading Tatiana Botkin’s memoirs which I got translated by Google Translator in early 2012 (forgot to copy the website of the original Russian -_-) and I saw this little anecdote of the Little Pair. Anastasia really was the boss in their pairing XD

Maria and Anastasia loved to play … (Google translated it as nuliki and crosses), and knew a secret on how to always win. Gleb eventually became aware of that, and Anastasia, having been defeated by him several times, warned Maria Nikolaevna:
“Be careful Maria; he plays well.”

Another of Anastasia:

At about every five o’clock, my father would go to check Her Majesty’s heart[beat]. Before he would do so, my father always asked us to give him water for washing his hands, which we put into a glass … (it has been translated as a “cup” but I think it’s a “bowl” instead) which is called the Grand Duchesses' “prostokvashnitsey”.
One day while we were away, my father asked Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna who was sitting nearby to go to the hallway and ask an attendant to get him water.
“What are you going to do?”, asked Anastasia.
“I will wash my hands”, my father replied.
“I’ll get it for you”.
My father protested so she said, “If your children can do it, why can’t I?”

Anastasia is so kind and helpful ^^  I wonder how old she was when this happened.

Amazing colored fotos  by the most wonderful Yelena Aleksandrovna. Endless thank you very much!

Thanks for sharing GD Shandroise, but I'm a little confused by this...

What was he protesting? He asked her to get to water, she questioned but then agreed to do so, and then he complained about something? I must be missing something because I'm not following this...

Edubs, what I think this means is that Dr. Botkin is telling Anastasia, in effect, "you needn't do that, dear, the attendant will fetch the water for me. It's his duty. Kind of you to offer, but it would be better that way (possibly also  thinking an attendant might be more careful with the water basin than the impetuous Anastasia)".

From Ivan Belyayev's memoirs (from dearest matushka who kindly gave the link to me when I asked for it ^^)
Any mistranslation is my fault for which I apologize in advance.

On holidays and on birthdays and name's days of anyone in the Imperial family, all the children would arrive in a car. They always asked to spend those days with us.

"Your Highness, what was presented to you today?", I asked Grand Duchess Anastasia who shyly hid a thin platinum bracelet (? - the word is Обручики/obruchiki) under her sleeve.
"Oh, I already see it. Was it presented to you by your mama?"
"Both my papa and mama! From my mama's old things.", the sweet girl, blushing, tried to hide a necklace which shined on her white neck.
"And that?"
"Same thing! From my mama's old things..."

LOL, this is an example of a shy and humble Anastasia. I can imagine the inflections in her voice while saying those responses to the inquisitive Belyayev.

A few weeks ago there was an anecdote circulating about Anastasia jumping off the table in the playroom and Miss Eagar tying her to a chair to get her to stop. It seemed like what Rachel Maddow calls bullpucky to me but I was wondering if anyone here had ever heard it. I'll try to find the text.

I remember this anecdote roughly, though I can't place its source right now. I also tend to believe it. Would also like to have it elaborated and pinned down as to source.

I just think it's unlikely she would have been permitted to strike a grand duchess and then tie her to a chair.

Have you tried Eagar's memoirs?
