she was born in 1928 the daughter of the duke and duchess of Aragon in 1931 Spain became a republic and the family fled they later returned to spain when franco came to power Fabiola worked as a nurse for many years but at the age of 30 she was still unmarried she had met king Boadoin of Belgium at a state Galla he was unmarried and chiledless they married in 1960 Fabiola had many miscaridges but only one is offcial when they made a visit to the pope he blessed her and promist to be its godfarther but the baby was still born they had no children. Boadoin abdicated in 1990 rather that sine a law that legalised abortion both she and Boadoin were devout cathlics but this move made them unpopular Boudoin was restored a month later and the law was past he died in spain in 1993 at the age of 63. Fabiola was devistated by this loss she is the paitren of many childrens charitys she offen said thr belgian people were her children. Boadoin was succeded by his brother Albert who married a beautifful Italian princess Dona Paola de Callibrii the press have offern reported on an extreemly strained relaitionship between the too her son is married to a Polish countess. Fabiola was said to be unhappy that the royal line will be carried on by Paola and Albert not Boadoin and herself she is now retied from public life.
King Baudouin (1930-1993) abdicated for one day, in agreement with the government, when abortion was legalized in Belgium. The government recognized that the King being a deeply catholic person, this was not a sanction he could put his suignature on, and rather than cause a constitutional crisis, they agreed that he would abdicate for 24 hours, hence the law never received a royal signature and the King resumed the throne the following day.
Queen Fabiola, who I have had the honor of meeting, continues to carry our a considerable number of royal duties, both in Belgium and abroad. Whenever foreign dignitaries visit Brussels, Queen Fabiola is always present at official functions at the Royal Palace, for example. She always attends the various concerts hosted at the palace as well. Last year she also led the belgian delegation to the beatification of Emperor Karl of Austria, which was celebrated by His Holiness at the Vatican.
Fabiola is a very different type of person than Paola, a more vivacious and more fun-loving character, not as old-style Catholic as Queen Fabiola. Hence their character differences.
King Albert II of the belgians married Italian-born Princess Paola Ruffo di Calabria in 1959. They had three children: Philippe, Astrid and Laurent. Philippe is not married to a Polish Countess, rather hiis wife is the former Mathilde d'Udekem d'Acoz, by whom he has two children: Elisabeth and Gabriel. Princess Mathilde's father, a Belgian aristocrat, was made a Count by King Albert II when Mathilde married Philippe - in fact the entire d'Udekem d'Acoz family were made counts and countesses. Mathilde's mother, Countess Anne-Marie Komorowski, is from a polish countal family.
Philippe's sister, Astrid, is married to Archduke Lorenz of Austria-Este and they have three daughters and two sons, all with succession rights in Belgium, as well as in Austria. Albert and Paola's youngest son Laurent, is married to Claire Coombs and they have a baby daughter by the name of Louise.
As a member of the press, I went to Philippe and Laurent's weddings in 1999 and 2003, respectively. Both were extensively covered by my magazine,
The European Royal History Journal, and I was also on belgian television commenting on the events of both days.
