Ella's Personal Icon
« on: March 24, 2005, 07:14:48 AM »
Here is a link to an icon that was given by Grand Duchess Ella. It was sold at Sotheby's in 2003 during the "Of Royal and Noble Descent" sale.

The link has a picture of the icon, as well as a description of its provenance. It is signed on the back "Aunt Ella".

Oh wow! rgt9w...how on earth do you find all these magnificent things! Thank you for posting it! Wish I could afford to bid for it!  :)  Too late it's sold anyway.

Hello Bluetoria! I'm glad you found this posting, as I posted it in response to the discussion about the reliquaries and your desire to own an item of Ella's.

Sotheby's maintains a wonderful site with web editons of their catalogues. You can find some interesting items featured in the Russian and Nobility sales.

That was really kind of you, & I do appreciate it, thank you.  :)
I'm afraid most Sotherby's things are rather beyond me but one day....(I can always dream) !

The details on the site state the icon was presented to Nicholas and Alexandra by Ella on the seventh anniversary of their engagement.

I'm glad you liked the pictures of the icon. Although she was Nicholas' aunt by marriage to the Grand Duke Serge. I thought it was interesting that Ella chose to "sign" the icon as Aunt Ella instead of just Ella even though it was also being presented to her sister Alexandra as well.
