Here Thomas - I enlarged it for you - it looks like Alix in the year of their engagement, don't you think?  The cosy corner was full of photographs pushed into the shelves like photograph racks.  These pictures were put away in 1917 before they left from Siberia and reassembled later when the palace was opened to the public.  This framed one stayed and was never put away so it's position probably dates as early as 1895.

The hair style is earlier so perhaps you are right - hmmm, it does look like Elizabeth - you are right!  Alix had a number of pictures of Elizabeth in the Mauve Room.

Thomas:

Don't you think that is Ella's nose?  Those bangs also look like a Langtry cut, don't you think?

That is the best I have, Thomas - it is blown up from a original photograph.

Yes, it certainly does look like the Langtry cut! (And I'm delighted to find a reference to Lillie Langtry . . . she is another one of my interests!)

I'm not sure if it is Ella or Irene, but it is a fascinating portrait!

Janet - I have been interested in Lillie since the series with Francesca Annis.  She is an amazing woman (both of them, Francesca and the Jersey Lily)!

Bob, I agree totally. Ms. Annis was amazing in that role, as were all the other actors . . . and how terrific to see not only Oscar Wilde and James Whistler, but the Prince and Princess of Wales, plus briefly Prince Leopold and Princess Louise! (Not to mention Louis Battenberg!  ::) ) One of these days I want to see her California ranch--and I guess you've been to Langtry?!

What is it about turn-of-the-century (not ours, but the one 100 years ago) personalities? I find them unendingly fascinating . . .

Janet, did you think the performances were corrrect?  The way they showed the Prince of Wales was very different than the way he was portrayed in Duchess of Duke Street and Upstairs Downstairs - if you saw all of these which do you think was accurate?

Not to mention the lover of Prince Louis, husband to Victoria, the eldest of Alice's daughters.    ;)

Interesting question, Bob!  And don't forget the wonderful Edward the King series, starring none other than the actor who portrayed Dr. Botkin in N & A.

My feeling re: all these portrayals--which have the basics in common, but may differ in tone--is that we are seeing the same person from different perspectives, much as we see Nicky through the different "filters" of his family, friends, ministers, household, etc.  Since I'm fascinated by Edward, I say "the more the merrier."

While on the same subject, I wrote a bit of verse some time ago for an English class (it's a particular type of verse--the name escapes me at the moment--which has four lines, the first line ending with the name of the person, and a rhyme scheme of AABB):

Edward the King, Prince of Wales
Beloved by all women, envied by all males
Gave his life over to wine, women and song.
(That is, when Mummy didn't tag along.)

I created a similar verse re: Rasputin, but that's for another time!

This is my first post on this discussion board. I´ve really enjoyed reading everything here - lots of new interesting information I never had an idea of...
Just have to mention one more series while on the topic: The Lost Prince, directed & written by Stephen Pouliakoff. You have to go to www.bbc.co.uk/drama/lostprince/ - gorgeous pics!
N & A & OTMA are all there! Lots of outstanding actors portraying Edward VII, Alexandra, Georg V, Mary etc.
Pouliakoff is known for making exceptionally beautiful productions for the bbc. Costumes, props everything is accurate. Aired in UK this year.

I thought the way they represented N&A was really out of touch. Nicky was said to speak english better tyhan an english man yet on the series you could tell that he was definetely russian. A|lso the way they showed Alix as a really paticular and stff person really surprised me, especially as she was a round close family.

May I remind posters to stay consistent with the specific thread subject? There are threads to discuss television and film portrayals. This thread is about a photo in the Mauve Room, no??  :)
