Object of Virtue, by Nick Nicholson

It surprises me no-one has yet touched on this subject, so here goes !

Just finished this book. Now I’m not a great fiction-reader, as usually the “fiction”  to me is more like “science-fiction”, but this book is the exception ! A véry pleasant read. Once you start you can't put it down.

Well thought-through (and very important: believable) storyline, descriptive enough so you can make it visual in your own mind, flashbacks into Imperial and Soviet Russia that seem so real that you can’t help thinking these  situations actually happened (but you know it’s “just” fiction), and véry lifelike characters (“Can I wear Balençiaga to breakfast” (pg 232)  brought back happy memories!

Has anyone else read “Object of Virtue”, and if so what did yóu think of it ?

JWK, yours is a timely reminder that I need to read this book! Not only is the author one of the frequent posters to this website, but he also knows very much of "whence he speaks," so his book will undoubtedly have an authenticity about it that so many others do not. Thanks again for bringing Object of Virtue to our attention!

I have to echo everything Janet said.

I purchased this some time ago, started it, got sidetracked by "real life" about thirty pages in and consequently, have to start all over again.  It is currently in the nightstand stack, awaiting its turn (or, as I like to say, it's "on deck" for fellow baseball enthusiasts).  I am looking forward to it.

Let me also make very clear--my inability to get it completed thus far is not in any way to be construed as a comment on the book's quality.  It took me four false starts with John Kennedy Toole's "A Confederacy of Dunces" and that is one of my favorite books of all time.

Update: I'm halfway through and enjoying it immensely.  Should be able to finish this weekend.  The author has a very descriptive "voice."

I'm almost finished with it and i love it.Nick is very descriptive and tells a wonderful story.A very pleasurable read.

Am reading and really enjoying this novel by Nicholas B. A. Nicholson.  Lots of Faberge and a lovely pen-portrait of Empress Alexandra circa 1913.  What do you people think of this book?

Nelly, I loved it!  Nick is a wonderful writer.....I hope that he writes a lot more.  I am one of the few here who enjoy fiction of the Romanov's if it is done well.

Have you read Steve Barry's Romanov historical fiction?  I love it too.

Barry is okay...I'm not crazy about him, but I respect his work.

I thought Object of Virtue was excellent and Nick is indeed a wonderful writer. His expertise really shows in this novel, particularly about the details of Faberge and the creation of his pieces. I love historical fiction as well Arleen, and I would consider Nick's novel to be among the best I've read that are Romanov related. Steve Barry's Romanov Prophecy will always be special to me--besides being an enjoyable piece of literature, his book sparked and strengthened my passion for the Imperial Family.  ;)
