These next two are of his first wife Auguste of Reuss-Schleiz-Köstritz (1822-1862). Her death devastated him.

I guess the second picture is his second wife....great pics by the way!

The pictures were taken from a book of family photographs and they state that the second of the above pictures is of the first wife also. I have to agree that it looks like the second wife.

One of the brothers of prince Henry of the Netherlands
duke Friedrich Wilhelm Adolf Günther 1871-1897. It was rumoured that duke Friedrich was the supposed candidate to marry queen Wilhelmina if he would not have died so young of age. He himself visited the two queens (Emma and Wilhelmina) in The Hague.

What did he die of ?
And he was already 28 y.old

He was serving the German Imperial Navy and was killed in an accident on the river Elbe near Cuxhaven (Northern Germany).

Just a quick reminder that the FA has requested photos be kept to 3-4 per post. If they are too large or too numerous, it is hard (sometimes extremely so) for people with dial-up to load the page. Thanks.  :)

The old lady w/ the white head dress in the center 1st pic is Queen Emma of the Netherlands.  The lady standing on the upper right side of Emma with white dress and lace headdress/veil looks like her daughter Queen Wilhelmina.

The 2nd picture, the lady standing in the middle with a white dress looks like Marie princess von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt (1850-1922), mother of prrince Henry of the Netherlands

This is his second wife Anna of Hessen-Darmstadt (1843-1865)

Wasn't this princess the sister-in-law of Princess Alice of Great Britain? Did I read, somewhere, that this lady was vetted as a possible bride for the future Edward VII?

If memory serves, Mecklenburg's ruling families have rather unique origins.

Their founder wasn't German, but was a Slavic tribal chieftain. The Germans were expanding eastward across the Elbe. Niklot (I think was his name) correctly read the signs, and allied himself with the Holy Roman Emperors.
Almost alone of the old Wendish (or Sorbian) ruling families, his descendants held onto their position after the German Conquest.

His son or grandson was made a Prince of the Empire, and they went on from there.

It's kind of charming to think that this family represents a link to the original Slavic inhabitants of eastern Germany.
