The diaries of Alexander Polovtsov, secretary of the State Council in the 1880's, say that the gentlemen's costumes were generally more historically accurate than the ladies' dresses at these fancy dress balls.  It stands to reason, since men's fashions change less readily than those of the fairer sex.

I am reading Christopher Warwick's book "Ella, princess, saint and martyr" and on page 208, it speaks of  the Tsar and  Tsarina and their guests crossing  a bridge to go to the Hermitage Theatre, where there was a masque was performed in their honour.

Here also, a group photo was taken.

Has anyone seen this photo please?      Would be so lovely to see ALL in the costumes they are wearing.

An additional tit-bit. Grand Duke Michael {Misha} Nicky's brother borrowed a fan shaped  diamond aigrette from his mother The Dowager Empress{ Minnie}  to wear on his hat. It became detached during the night and was lost.
There is a photo  of Misha in his costime for the ball and the aigrette can clearly be seen.
I found this on Alex Palace, 1903 Costume Ball  www.costumes.org/history/100pages1903BALL.HTM
Misha is the 3rd photo in tradition costume of the tsarevitch.

I donot know how to do photos. And I give credit to the poster who had the info on the 1903 costume ball  topic.

all 3 of these have probably been posted before, but i'm posting them anyway because i think these maight be (slightly) better, although still not terribly crisp.   i also realized the section w/  Zenaïda Yusupova was missing from Nadya_Arapov's group.  (or i wasn't looking hard enough, which is a distinct possibility ;-P  )

.

click on the images for larger versions

.

princess Zenaïda Nikolaevna Yusupova

princess Orlova

QUESTION:
(and i apologize if this has already been asked & answered, but....)
is this Anna Vyrubova?
i realize it's rather difficult to tell in here (the original isn't much better) --- even if it's not her, this lady sure does look like her (at least she does in the book!  :-)

"Russia: In Original Photographs, 1860-1920," by Marvin Lyons

isn't that a wonderful book?

unfortunately, i've yet to find my own copy of it, but when i was in college in kentucky, i was lucky enough to find his Nicholas II: the Last Tsar (one of my all-time favorites!) & the one by Chloe Obolensky (i can't recall the title @ the moment).

sidenote: my piece of unsolicited advice for today --> one should ALWAYS check out your local library's booksales!!   i just realized, i found Marvin Lyons' Nicholas II at a booksale of the Lexington Public Library...it was a "moving sale" & "purge" of sorts (old building to new building).......and i bought my copy of F.F. Yusupov's Lost Splendour at a Paducah (kentucky) Public Library booksale in1986!

That is such excellent advice. I have found so many rare books at our main library's annual sales.

You might check this website if you are still looking for Marvin Lyons book. http://www.bookfinder.com/

Zinaida Yusupov was in my picture, but yours does provide a far clearer image of her face. ;-)
