I may be wrong, but I think she died very wealthy.I dont know how her Austrian relatives were involved. She was the first princess of Belgiam. The Kaiser had his army bypass her ,so she didnt know what was happening.

Felix,

It is also my understanding she died very wealthy but I cannot figure out where the money came from.

I also remember reading somrthing that her brother tried to steal/embezzle her money.

I think it was published in the paper that she died with an estate worth GBP 27,000 (in that day's currency)

Could it be her dowry and from Leopold I after his death since she is his favorite child?  Also, what about from her mother Queen Louise?  Charlotte is their only daughter after all and they only have 3 children.

After her death, her money went to her nieces, Leopold II's daughters...

I had not come across this thread.  I guess now I know how russians must feel when we write about their history..... Maximilian's skin and skull sold as "souvenirs"???... Juarez a Comunist??...

Wasnt his body returned to Austria, and his Mother viewed it?

The body of Ferdinand Maximilian Joseph Archduke of Austria, Emperor of Mexico was sent to Austria after he was court  martialed, condemned to death and executed... No  mutilations were done to his body and there were no lines on the streets trying to get their "souveniers" of  the last Mexican Empire"......

No, Felix. I had not heard the mutilation stories either. As with all these royal legends, there are plenty of fact & fiction.

T,sorry it took me so long to answer about Charlotte's wealth. I found that the Coburgs and Hapsburgs had to bargain over her. The Coburgs didnt want the Hapsburgs to get  a Coburg fortune. King Leopold offered Miramar and Charlottes estate Lacroma. Her money came from her Fathers will. Franz Joseph agreed, and let her leave Austria. Not one member of the Hapsburgs went to see her after her return.

God.. I wonder what parts of Mexico you have been around...

I have been living  most of my life in Mexico and to be honest I am SHOCKED !!.. Are you impliying Mexicans are Savage enough to have done something like that??

Your behavior reminded me of an american who was in a sociology class when I was studying college in the U.S.A. and he claimed that Being Mexicans a minority group in the U.S.A, they MUST be a minority in Mexico.
Of course the tension exploted when I said that Americans were considered a minority group in Mexico.... for obvious reasons... I must say I came out of the classroom alive due to the fact that the class teacher was from England....and he explained what "Minority" meant....

Best Regards
