Mashka is the first unmarried grand duchess to have her own "real" bed. It's according to Lili Dehn's memoirs.

Amazing colored fotos  by the most wonderful Yelena Aleksandrovna. Endless thank you very much!

Do you mean not have a camp cot? But I'm pretty sure she had one.

Yes, not a camp cot. A very comfortable thick-mattressed bed is what they mean "real bed" for married GDs.

If she had a "real bed", wouldn't OTA have one too?

But if she had it, that's only because she fell terribly ill a bit after her siblings had measles in 1917. She got a kind of pneumonia, if I'm not wrong.

Yes. She didn´t own the bed, she was just using one when having that terrible illness, to be more comfortable. Her condition was probably much more serious than her siblings.

Lili Dehn:

"The Grand Duchess Marie was seriously ill, and I relieved the Empress in nursing her... I had taken upon myself the task, formerly performed by the Empress, of sponging poor Marie's body, and, when the child was conscious, she liked me to brush and comb her lovely hair, which became sadly tangled as she tossed to and fro in her delirium. Marie was the first unmarried Grand Duchess to sleep on a "real" bed of her own, but, as she was so ill, we moved her from the narrow camp-bed to a more comfortable resting-place."

It's a little complicated...

When Maria was born in 1899, the date was 14 June on the Russian calendar, and 26 June on the western calendar. At that time there was a twelve day difference between the two calendars. However, beginning in 1900 the difference between the two calendars increased to thirteen days. So 14 June in Russia began falling on 27 June in the west. Which means that from the time she was one year old, Maria's birthday was celebrated on 14/27 June.

If you follow the western calendar and want to observe the anniversary of Maria's birth now, it's 27 June.

Here's a 2009 calendar that shows both the old and new style dates: http://5ko.free.fr/en/jul.php?y=2009

I agree with you, in the next century(by meaning this , 21st century), difference will grown to 14 days, correct? So, in the 19th century her b-day was on June 26, in 20th she celebrated on June 27. But June 14 (old Calendar hasn't moved up to 15, or 16th, since it is impossible). Russia accepted New Calendar in 1919, so I presume, her real b-day was on June 14 (to her death,in 1918, complicated, I know, but still true).

Yes, on 16 February 2100, the difference will increase from 13 to 14 days.

I have started a thread on this on the Big Pair's threads.

I know that Maria was always the angel, but there seems to be more to her than just that. Does anybody have any other info? Please use anecdotes, snippets from biographies, or photos and their captions if necessary.

Thank you,
Olga Bernice

i read somewhere of a story where at a dinner or something (i can't remember exactly what) maria misbehaved and was disobediant, alix was so shocked that she was going to send her straight to her room, when nicholas stopped her saying, he was glad she was a "human child". also she was quite smart but was lazy i've read several times so didn't really have the get-go you might say to apply herself.
also that she could be a bit grumpy, although i don't think  moody like olga, although i could be wrong so anyone feel free to correct me.
