My apologies!  I should have worded my question more clearly. :-[ The portrait of Nicholas hanging in the corner of the Maple Room to the right of two Kaulbachs was, of course, by Becker.

I am looking, though, for information on the portrait that Kaulbach did of Nicholas in 1903. I am curious where it used to hang in the AP. I posted my initial question in this thread as the other Kaulbach portraits were mentioned here and I thought it not unlikely that Kaulbach's portrait of Nicholas had hung somewhere in this room too. I do not know for sure, though, in which room it used to be.

The Maple Room was the finest Art Nouveau room in Russia - it's a shame that changing fashion and politics lead the Russian authorities to destroy it.  There is STILL a problem with how some Russians feel about "Style Moderne" - as it is called there.  Some think it is decadent and not worthy of study or presevation in comparison with Russian Empire interiors.

Bob:

The old photos show the wood panels.  I've read this wood had to be soaked in water for years before it could be worked that way. Are those features still in that room?  It seems these features would be the most difficult to replace or restore. Please advise. Thanks.

I know that there are many issues concerning the return of original belongings to the AP, but is it possible that Pavlovsk will ever return this furniture to its rightful home?

I had a long talk with the Director of the Yelagin Palace Museum a couple of years ago, who bemoaned the number of original Yelagin Palace items now at Pavlovsk, Peterhof and the Hermitage, and their respective tenaciousness in hanging on to these items. So, my guess is not any time soon.

Thank you very, very much for this information, Vladimir! :) :) May I ask where you found this list?

I must confess that I'm getting more and more puzzled. Kaulbach's portrait of Tsar Nicholas must have hung somewhere! Unless it used to hang in one of the other palaces... :-\

Thank you, Vladimir. :) That's a publication not easy to obtain, I guess.

Unfortunately, it does not make any mention of Kaulbach's portrait of Nicholas. Apparently, it was either lost or it never hang at the Alexander Palace at all. :-\ It's a pity we don't know more about this beautiful portrait. :'(

I saw a copy of it a while back - it was being sold along with a set of the other Kaulbach's from the Maple Room in a 1900s print set from Munich.  I think I have a small image of it somewhere I will look.

The "Young Woman" by Kaulbach is called "Bacchanate", a follower or priestess of the god Bacchus.  It's at Pavlovsk, along with the pastels of Ernie and Elizabeth.

Kuchumov told me carvings from the Maple Room were at the Hermitage, along with the Tiffany light fixutures.  It''s possible I misunderstood him.  Since the Maple Room was mostly preserved after the war it makes sense parts of the wonderful carvings, the stained glass and fight fixtures were saved.  Why theu would have gone to the hermitage instead of Pavlovsk I don't know...

The art nouveau woman clock from over the corner cabinet is at Pavlovsk as well.

where did the Tiffany light fixtures come from?  Was that Ernest's idea?  I would have thought Galle or Faberge - Tiffany surprises me.

I think you can ask in the museum.

I have asked dear Mrs. Bordovskaya about this statue.
She very kindly explained me that this is the original statue of end 19/beginning of 20 which looks like "Winter" which was at  the room of the time of Nicholas / Alexandra :) As far as I undestood, no name and no author (or, maybe, not famouse one).
