I was reading a translation of Alexandra's 1917 diary and found an entry that states Joy (Alexei's dog) was bitten by a poisonous snake during the trip into exile to Tobolsk. Is this the only notation of this event?  Was the dog significantly injured or was it a "dry" bite?

This is also the version I've read.

Interesting. The source I read it in was the English translation of "Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, Her Diaries: 1917 & 1918" by Stephen R. de Angelis.  I quote from the August 9, 1917 entry "Joy was bitten by a poisonous snake."

Now I'm very curious to figure out which is correct.  I would think if Joy had been bitten, there would have been subsequent entries of Joy's injuries by the Empress or anecdotes by other members of the family or suite given Joy was a family pet.

Nicholas II does mention the snake incident also.

For those who speak the Russian language, here are the relevant sentences from Nicholas' and Alexandra's diaries.

Alexandra:  "Джой укушен ядовитой змеей."

Nicholas: "Джоя укусила змея."

Yes, that is what they recorded in their respective diaries.

This incident happended on the journey from Tsarskoe Selo to Tobolsk.

It is not mentioned in any of their extant letters.

Empress Alexandra reported it in the passive voice: "Joy was bitten by a poisonous snake".

Tsar Nicholas wrote in the active voice: "A snake bit Joy".

Do you have the date of those entries handy? I'd like to note the incident in my copy of the diaries.

To be more precise: It was after the Imperial family had already arrived in Tobolsk, but were still living on the boat while the houses were being made ready for them.

It was during one of their daily excursions.

So very glad to see this thread is still active.

I've always found that humans show more of their true character when next to their pets.
