Berengaria

Portuguese princess, daughter of king Sancho I of Portugal and queen Dulce.
Born 1194
Died 1221

Was the 2nd wife of Valdemar II (1170–1241), King of Denmark. They married in 1213.

They had 4 children:
Eric IV           (1216-1250)
Sophie          (1217-1241)
Abel              (1218-1252)
Cristopher I  (1219-1259)

All the 3 sons became Kings of Denmark!

Does anybody know more things about Queen Berengaria?

A little bit, dear Grand Duke-
Valdemar's second wife. Name changed to Danish "Berngerd" the "bear's keeper". Dubious honour.
Beautiful but equally evil, according to Danish ballads.  When her grave was examined in 1855 by Frederik VII "skeleton intact and skull extremely beautiful and well-formed". A lock of her hair is kept in Ringsted Church.  The famous Danish flag- "Dannebrog" came into being during this reign.
I would guess the lady may be confused with Berengaria, wife of England's Richard I  which is another story altogether.

Thank you very much, Robert.

Anybody can confirm if she had leprosy?

I heard this info from a very important historian! Both her father Sancho I and her brother Afonso II, kings of Portugal had this disease...

I have not read such information and I am not an expert by any stretch. Perhaps that is why the skeleton & skull were duly noted as excellent & beautiful ?

Perhaps also worthy of note: Lisbon was noted as being "healthy", " in a medieval sense" more likely to be free of pestilence & polluted air.  Why note such things if a disease were not of concern ? = brides exportable !

Robert, Berengaria's Danish name is written: Bengerd.
With this name I found more infos about her but only in Danish... I will try to translate it! And found some pictures:

Queen Berengaria of Denmark.

I am looking for pictures of Magnus, king of Livonia and his wife Maria Rurikide and Johann, duke of S.Holstein Sonderburg and his two wives, (Elizabeth of Brunswick and Agnes of Anhalt) the latter the ancestor of so many present royals.

Thanks in advance.

This Forum is for early Danish, I suppose you all mean royalty?
One of the most intriguing Queens of Denmark is actually Queen Margrethe I. who was the first sovereign to unite the countries of Norway, Iceland, Greenland, the Faroeislands, Sweden and some of Germany under the Danish flag in a united Denmark, by ingenuity and shrewd skills and craftsmanship, she was to be seen on horseback in battels at the front.
Danish Queen 1387-1397 (b. Marts 1353 - d. 28. oktober 1412)

Two portraits of Hans (Johann) The Younger, 1545-1622, first Duke of Sonderburg, and ancestor to all the Sonderburg lines.

Its strange that when her husband died she did not remarry, I would have thought that the death of her son without issue (is it known what he died of?) would have made her want to remarry again to continue the dynasty. Even Erik of Pomerania who ruled after her did not remarry when his English Queen died, very strange also, you would think he would have wanted a son to succeed him?.

After her son died She seemed content to have her great-nephew appointed Ruler of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. By this time She was by some sources thirty- four which was old for child bearing. She  entered into negotiations with Henri IV of England for a double wedding between England and the Nordic Union. King Eric would marry King Henry's daughter, Philippa, and King Henry's son, the Prince of Wales, future King Henry V,  would marry King Eric's sister, Catherine. Negotiations dwindled down to one wedding. On 26 October 1406 King Eric married the 13-year-old Philippa, daughter of Henry IV of England.

I came across a source that indicated rumors about her death? Has anyone heard that She might not have died of natural causes?

Thanks for those links ! very interesting information! I wonder if the sister of Eric would have married the future Henry V of England, who would have become king after Eric? as there would not have been a Christopher of Bavaria, to succeed Eric.
