Mercedes was NOT an Infanta of Spain.  In 1908, Alfonso XIII issued a decree that gave the position and honor of an Infant of Spain to Carlos' children by his second marriage.  But they did not have the title Infante or Infanta of Spain - rather the rank of an Infant of Spain

All confusing to me--this is what the Online Gotha (Paul Theroff's site) says:

Carlo Maria Francesco d'Assisi Pasquale Ferdinando Antonio di Padova Francesco di Paola Alfonso Andreas Avelino Tancredi, renounced his succession rights 14 Dec 1900 and was cr Infant of Spain 7 Feb 1901 (1870- 1949); m.1st 14 Feb 1901 Maria de las Mercedes Infanta of Spain (1880-1904); m.2d Woodnorton, Worcs 16 Nov 1907 Pss Louise d'Orléans (1882-1958); his children, in addition to any Two Sicilies titles which were not lost by the renunciation, were Infants of Spain

Here she is with 3 of her children:

The youngest son, Alfonso, was accidentally killed when a gun was discharged while he was with Juan Carlos--they were both boys. Very sad.  :(

The Online Gotha is incorrect.  the children were given the status and honor of an infant of spain, but not the title.  This is quite clear in the actual decree.

Infante = male Spanish or Portuguese royal

Infanta = female Spanish or Portuguese royal

Infant = child

Yes that is HM King don Juan Carlos and the late Madame, the Countess of Paris.  Madame and the late Countess of Barcelona, besides being cousins and childhood friends, were extremely close throughout their life.  It helped of course that Madam'es eldest brother was married to the Countess' youngest sister.

Incorrect.  The children of the second mariage of the Infante don Carlos were not made Infantes/as of Spain.  They were given the HRH by King Alfonso XIII as Princes/ess of Bourbon, not of the Two Sicilies, but just Bourbon.  Forget not that the late Countess' father had renounced to his Sicilian titles in 1900 through the Act of Cannes.  Alfonso XIII also granted them treatment as Infantes/as of Spain, but without the actual title.

Again I refer you to the late Countess' memoirs which are a treasure trove of information.

Thanks for the clearification Art. According to the Gotha, the decendents of Don Carlos's children of the second marriage was granted the title of Princes/Princesses of Borbon with honours and placements of Infantes of Spain by Royal Decree of King Alfonso XIII on 3 Aug 1908.
