Willing?

Did Queen Mary marry the Earl of Bothwell willingly? I have read otherwise and would like to know what the general view is.

I'm not sure. I think the Scottish Parliament put some pressure on her to marry him. I thought she was really in love with Darnley.

Hmmm, i too am unsure about this. :-/

After Darnley was murdered, Bothwell was a prime suspect - it was absolute madness for Mary to marry him.

I have heard several theories:

1] Mary loved Bothwell, and had for years, so she married him regardless of the consqeuences

2] Bothwell captured and raped Mary, forcing her to marry him

3] Bothwell captured Mary and wooed her over a short period of time

4] Mary had porphyria, and her decision was influenced by 'madness' . . .

At the moment, I'm really not sure which answer is right!

Yes, I've never really beleived the poryphria thing . . . Mary, we must remember, was in a state of high nervous tension at the time. She would likely have been very suggestible - perhaps Bothwell somehow managed to convince her that marrying him would be the best thing to do!

Maybe it would have been the best choice if Moray hadn't 'trapped' them in his conspiracies. And yes, Mary was in such a nervous state, that she miscarried her twin sons in advanced pregnancy!

Moray! He was an awful man. Mary annoys me almost as much for trusting him so much!

Imagine what would have happened to those twins if they had been born . . .

Out of Prince Lieven's list, I reckon 1 or 3. For all his sins Bothwell was constant in his support of Mary- even though he was protestant.

Oh yes, I meant 3 instead of 2 in my options choosing! I am with you, Kim!

I always like to think that Bothwell was Mary's "grand passion". her life went so badly wrong so quickly after the death of Darnley. The old romantic in me thinks she deserved to have some passion and sexual satisfaction and I hope she achieved that with Bothwell.

You're right, Kim, in that after everything that happened to her Mary certainly deserved happiness. Sometimes, though, her decisions were so bad it almost makes me think she was striving for self-destruction!  :-/

Tizer? I'm glad I've never heard of it . . . I, on the other hand, am very high maintainance! Any rich widows/spinsters out there?  ;)
