Does anyone know why their faces are not painted?

Maybe the style of painting? It's kind of a watercoloring--sort of impressionist-looking.

Yes, you are probably right. I just thought maybe there was some kind of symbolism in it, or he didnt finish it, since they other Serov paintings I have seen, shows their faces. Im clueless when it comes to art!

Don't speak Russian but I understand this!Yes,is this portrait in this palace!I think I remember the staircase because I was there last year!

Yes, in that "portrait", she is walking down the Jordan Staircase in the Winter Palace. It can still be seen today. I highly doubt that's a real portrait though, for as grandduchessella points out, they only have one person designing the covers of the books. Besides, it really doesn't look very much like a portrait of her or in general.

As for no faces in that painting, it's probably just for effect. Gives more impact and makes it more unique. It might have also been too difficult to paint all of their faces in such a close proximity.

Dear Kmerov,

I have an old postcard of the picture of Nicholas being anointed at his coronation, and his face is very distinct,  the others more so.

Maybe the one you posted was the work in progress?
Wish my scanner was working  :-/

Many thanks for the wonderful pictures  :) Had never seen the lovely one of Olga in later life.

Sonny, you are welcome, and thanks for your reply :)
Maybe you are right about the coronation picture, and to bad about your scanner!

And also thanks for all the other suggestions posted by people in this thread. ;)

Does anyone have a picture of the painting of the Grand Dukes Serge,Paul and Nicholas that is in the current Nicholas and Alexandra exhibit?

I saw the exhibit in Cincy yesterday,it was fabulous btw,and I saw this painting and was just amazed at the detail.

Yes, Merrique, I know the one you are talking about.  This same question was posted on the exhibit thread, but so far no one has found it, or posted it.  Unfortunately, I don't have it, but would like to see it posted as well. :)

The background looks like some of the parade pictures for the Tercentenary celebrations.
