Auguste Victoria

Princess of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen

Born: 19 July 1890, Potsdam
Dead: 30 August 1966, Sigmaringen castle

Parents: William of Hohenzollern and his 1st wife Maria Theresa of Bourbon-Two-Sicilies

Marriage:
1st - 4 September 1913 with Manuel II, King of Portugal.
2nd - 23 April 1934 with count Charles Robert Douglas, head of the Scottish house of Douglas.

She had no childs from the 2 marriages!

Portugal become a Republic in 1910 and she married Manuel II in 1913, so she was not "de facto" the last Queen of Portugal despite she was married with the last King.
The last Queen of Portugal was Amélie, Manuel II's mother.

She was born a princess of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. Her uncle was Ferdinand I of Romania (he being a H-S as well). Her father had decided to stay as head of the family rather than take the throne of Romania. Her grandmother Antonia had been an Infanta of Portugal.

Auguste Viktoria Wilhelmine Antonie Mathilde Ludovika Josephine Maria Elisabeth was born at Potsdam on 19 Aug 1890. She married King Manuel of Portugal on 4 Sept 1913 (by which time he was in exile) in Sigmaringen. After she was widowed in 1932 she remarried 23 Apr 1939 to Robert Douglas. She was his 2nd wife as he had been divorced. I"m not sure of the circumstances but I think the Douglas's somehow ended up as German nobility? She died on 29 Aug 1966. She didn't have children with either husband (a fact which caused some succession problems with the no-longer-existant throne of Portugal as Manuel II was the last of his direct family).

Her brother Friedrich (who succeeded as Furst von Hohenzollern)  married Princess Margarete of Saxony (daughter of the scandalous Crown Princess Louise of Saxony) while his twin brother Franz Joseph married her sister Maria Alix.

Wouldn't she still be entitled to the title even if she was never a reigning consort?

Leopold Furst von Hohenzollern  m.Lisbon 1861 Infanta Antonia of Portugal

eldest child:
Wilhelm
m. (1) 1889 Princess Maria Teresa of Bourbon-Two Sicilies (2) 1915 Princess Adelgunde of Bavaria

their daughter:
Augusta Victoria  (1890-1966

so:
Antonia of Portugal--Wilhelm of H-Sigmaringen--Augusta Victoria

Furst Wilhelm's 2 brothers (AV's uncles):
King Ferdinand of Romania (who married Missy of Edinburgh)

Karl Anton (who married Princess Josephine of Belgium the sister of Albert I and the Duchess of Vendome)

Infanta Antonia died in 1913--I wonder if she was at the wedding since it was in Sigmaringen?

I don't know how many there might be other than that one since she wasn't a reigning consort.  :-/

You are right!I also wanted to ask about her second marriage:Was she married to the same Douglas family who were living in Germany(like the members Princess Elisabeth in Bayern or her sister Duchess Rosita of Marlborough, who were born Douglas)

Could be since all the events in their lives (marriage, residences and where they're buried) took place in Germany it seems.

I was in Burg Hohenzollern last April, in Baden-Wurttemberg, and they have a huge room with the Hohenzollern family tree till Kaiser Wilhelm II and I think the branch of the Sigmaringens till Ferdinand I of Romania I think. I was wondering, did Augusta Victoria die in Burg Hohenzollern? Hechingen is a small town at the bottom of the hill were Burg Hohenzollern ises. it's amgnificent!
