I had the pleasure of meeting King Olav V at a state dinner. I was his personal attendant during the whole dinner, and afterwords he came over to me, bowed, and said: Thank you for good service. I was so surprised and awed by his gesture that I just managed to mumble something like: The pleasure was all mine, Your Majesty. A gentleman to the fingertips, that was King Olav V.

Kind regards

The story goes that Princess Märtha was a good friend of Herluf Zahle, the Danish ambassador to Germany. She wanted to meet the woman claiming to be the daughter of the Tsar. She was of the impression that it was Tatiana. The moment she saw the unknown women, she said: But that isn't Tatiana, it is Anastasia.

Kind regards

Sarah, Duchess of York is at this moment on the Norwegian-Swedish talk show "Skavlan" flattering Norwegians by describing how kind King Olav was and how he put her at ease when she met him as a rather nervous, freshly minted princess.

(For those who wonder: She was interviewed in English, as she does not speak Norwegian (or Swedish), though she might have: As you may have heard there was speculation whether she would marry a certain Norwegian frozen fish tycoon and become Mrs. Frantzen! Unfortunately noble titles were abolished in Norway a long time ago, so no chance of her exchanging the Dukedom of York with an Earldom of Lofoten or Vesterålen (important fishing regions up north, the latter one the home region of Geir Frantzen and both places to which he has taken Sarah for both Christmas and other visits.)

This has some relevance to King Olav, as I seem to remember from the new Haakon & Maud biography that in the patriotic fever in 1905-1906 there was some suggestion to revive ancient medieval noble titles for younger members of the new dynasty à la Britain and Sweden. Earl of Lofoten (earl, in Norwegian jarl, is an old Norse title equivalent to duke) was one suggested title, but it was quickly dismissed as somewhat ridiculous and not in tune with a modern, sleek, semi-republican monarchy.

Fyodor, i ,among other in this forum , appreciate very much your effort to teach us how to spell right names and stuff but you must understand that mostly of us, with NO SPECiFIC names, as  Märtha, we just write it or in english or in our language (in spanish Martha is Marta). You must understand also that for mostly of all, just write and read english is a big challenge since its NOT our language. So,  anyway we KNOW of who we re talking about and honestly, sometimes your corrections sounds rather rude and snotty. Sorry,

I am just standing up for national, linguistic and typographic diversity in the face of ugly Microsoft monopolistic uniformity.

Wonderful picture of Märtha, Katenka_Fyodorovna, indeed she was named Märtha but for most people here on the forum does not have the letters Å,Ä,Ö which makes it hard for them to write Märtha, which only gives them the options to write Martha and Marta.

Hard, but not impossible:
Windows Alt Code for ä (make sure Num Lock is switched on): Alt+132
Windows-1252 code for ä: 228
Unicode: U+00E4

I do have ä on my keyboard, but holding down Ctrl and Shift and typing the Unicode UE4 also gives me an ä. It's easy!
