While surfing in the internet I came across this picture showing Ernie, Nicholas, Dickie Mountbatten (sitting in front) and two other boys.
I wonder who they are. Could they be Waldemar and Sigismund of Prussia, the sons of Irene?

I know that Ernie and Dickie Mountbatten saw each other regularly when the Battenbergs spent the summers on Heiligenberg.

What about Waldemar and Sigismund of Prussia?

I did not find one picture showing them with Ernie or their other uncles or aunts. I also wondered that they were not at Wolfsgarten or Friedberg when Nicholas and Alix stayed there with their family in 1910, nor have they been among the wedding guests at the wedding of Alice Battenberg and Andreas of Greece in 1903? Were there any reasons why they were excluded from family gatherings?

Does anybody have pictures with them and their cousins or uncles or aunts?

Thanks. Gabriella

Aloha all!

I found that picture in an illustrated biography of Lord Mountbatten along with a couple others of he and OTMAA -- I'm assuming that one of the young men in the picture is Dickie Mountbatten.

Hope this helps!

In his biography of Ernst Ludwig, Manfred Knodt wrote that both Waldemar and Sigismund came to Friedberg with Prince Henry and Princess Irene in 1910. Knodt did not write how long they stayed.

One of the pictures in this book shows a group of people behind a table at a bazar held at the Residential Palace at Darmstadt on 4 November 1908, including Prince Henry and Princess Irene, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig and his wife Eleonore, Princess Victoria von Battenberg and her husband Ludwig, and the young princes Sigismund of Prussia and Louis von Battenberg.

I apologize for bumping this, but I have a question about the two photos of Ernie holding Olga and Tatiana on his shoulder. Were those really taken in Germany? I thought those were taken in Livadia.

Ernie & Tatiana:

(my favorite)
Does anyone else see a resemblance between Grand Duke Ernest and his niece Grand Duchess Tatiana? I have just noticed there is a resemblance, especially in the eyes and the smile.

Somone did noticed before that Tatiana resembled her mother the most.  :)

I agree. She did look more like Alexandra than the others.

You know, I've heard that said about Tatiana but I can't help wondering how she managed to be "more stylish" than OMA when they so often dressed identically?  ???

Some people just look better in their clothes than others.  It usually has nothing to do with the clothes, but with the individual - their confidence in themselves and how they are looking and what they are doing.  Tatiana in her photos seemed to have a bit more poise than Olga, which gives the impression of someone more in control, and that can mean in control of their bodies and clothes - more in control of their personal style.  In the two photos where Olga and Tatiana are each being carried on Ernie's shoulders, Tatiana seems more posed and graceful than Olga - more in control.  They're wearing pretty much the same outfits, but Tatiana looks more stylish.

Yes...and more talented too. I read she played the piano better than Olga even though she practiced less. Often wondered if she coukld have made a brilliant marriage. I think she resembled her grandmother Princess Alice in temperment.  :)

what did Ernie go through, emotionally and physically and politically, when his sisters and dear nieces were murdered? Did he hold up? did he spiral into depression? In actuality, for a non russian, he had more close relations murdered than anyone. Must have been beyond the ablity to handle.

Like Irene and VMH, Ernie was a realist. He also have to worry about his situation once the war was over and he lost the throne... ???
