I visited St. Petersburg & environs in September 2007, but have not had time to edit & post any pics until now.
But not for this list, I'm not sure i would have visited Feodorovsky Gorodok, so here are my photos, in appreciation!

I'll be posting my Alexander Palace Park, Catherine Palace Park, Peterhof Palace Park & other relevant pics in the next week.

Sometime soon, I'll be posting some "off the beaten track" photos from Alexander, Catherine & Peterhof palace parks.

Hi! Thanks for sharing your photos. Although obviously the majority of the place is in ruins it manages to conserve its beauty. From the photos alone, you can sense the religious spirit of Nicholas and Alexandra.

I visit Russia in 2005, but unfortunately, didn't have the oportunity to go there (my guide didn't aknowledge the place as "presentable", and honestly I didn't know how to get there alone), but I did manage to walk for some extent into the Alexander Park. It's a special place.

Не пойму что это фотомонтаж или ...? (Ратная палата).
I shall not understand what is it a photomontage or...? (Military chamber).

The Hermitage Amsterdam Museum states that the portrait was by an unknown artist c1915-16. The tower roof does not seem to correlate either to the Military Chamber or Gorodok buildings as there is missing the distinctive curved embrasures. As Nicholas was mostly at Stavka during this time period, I am wondering if the artist completed the figure with sittings by Nicholas possibly at Mogilev (which would have been minimal) and then filled the background with a representative style similar to Goroduk's. The sittings may not have been in Tsarskoe Selo. Another possibility is that the artist never had a sitting with Nicholas. It is curious that the Hermitage does not have in their archives the provenance of this portrait. The St. Petersburg and GARF archives have detailed daily records of the Tsar's appointments. How did it come into their possession? As it represents the Tsar, it may have been acquired for that reason from a pre-revolutionary mansion/studio.

I agree with Joanna : the building shown does not look like one in the Gorodok area (looks vaguely like the Konvoi's Officer's Mess but it doesn't sem to match either). As for the Hermitage dating it from 1915-16, they’re right insofar as it’s an original. As the Tsar received the St. George’s Cross (4th class) on October 25, 1915 it couldn’t have been made before that, unless it’s an older portait on which they added his new decoration as an update (it was sometimes done).

As Nicholas II can be seen wearing the winter-style « venguerka » (hussar tunic) from his Own Guards’ Hussar Regiment, I can only make 2 hypothesis :

It might have been painted for the Hussars’ Officers’ Mess, showing their Colonel-in-Chief wearing the highest military order (BTW regulations said it was the only order or medal to be worn at all times, on any uniform– even at the Front).

As for the backdrop, the regiment barracks were in the Sofia neighbourhood at Tsarskoe Selo : I haven’t yet had the opportunity of exploring this area of town but I know there was a large drilling field there. In 1908 Makovsky painted a huge portrait of Nicholas II on horseback wearing his full-dress Guard Hussars uniform with the Sofia field and Hussars church and barracks as a backdrop (Tsarskoe-Selo Museum Inv. No. 645-X). Doesn’t look like any building shown on that painting but it could show another one from a different angle (new building perhaps?), or just a fantasy one in the style Nicholas loved so much.

My 2 kopeks worth for it!

I too! Thanks Nikolai and my apologies as I thought you were questionning confirmation. The vagaries of translation and then I am off searching/analyzing!

The Military Chamber is a mystery to me. Twice I have attempted to get close. When taking photographs of surround of the Imperial farm building, a dog threatend attack. I still remember being scared silly, shaking, wanting to run, but then my sister started screaming. In Russian! I was stunned, stopped and stared at her, I think my jaw dropped, where did she know in our panic to yell in Russian? It was a nightmare. That dog (think Hound of the Baskervilles!) followed us all around feinting, teeth barred until we reached the lane on the other side when he retreated. Further east along the road in the distance through fields is the Chamber building, huge, abandoned and in our minds hundreds of dogs lurking. It was beyond our courage to try to see it! The same this year. After encountering the dogs at the steps to the entrance of the AP, we admitted we were wimps!

Daniel, further on the artist (I continue veering off on obscure conjectures!), do you think that it is possible to attribute the artist by the style of the portrait? There is a familiarity. I am curious at the lack of documentation. If the portrait was confiscated at the time of the revolution, it may be that it was uncompleted, therefore unsigned, and another artist later added final strokes.

The Feodorovsky Goroduk restoration is progressing. The wall along the lane that runs between it and the Imperial Garage and along Akademichesky is being rebuilt and roofed. The interior courtyard has been transformed with repairs and paint. Some of the towers have also been completed.
