But still, it would be interesting to read if only to see what they did that day. Even it means reading what they ate and so on. You could get a good feel for what the day was like, I'm sure.

What the last post said is true, it is nice to get a sense of their day to day life, and you can do this quite well through their diaries.

Well this is a bit more on Nicholas' half but here's a little something I recently read while re-reading NICHOLAS AND ALEXANDRA by Robert K. Massie:

"...he faithfully recorded, day after day,the state of the weather, the number of birds he shot, and the names of those with whom he talked and dined with."
And also:
(speaking of Nicholas' and King George V's diaries):"both were kept primarily as a catologue of engagements, written in a terse, monotonous prose, and regarded as one of the daily disciplines of an ordered life."(Massie goes on to explain how the diaries are different).
So here is what I'm thinking:
JUNE 3
Weather is warm and sunny.Quite wonderful.Didn't shoot any birds sadly, but there is always tomorrow.I dined with darling Mama and Xenia.

OR as Julia Montague said something like:
JUNE 3
Awoke at 7
Weather-sunny,warm
birds shot-none
spoke,dined w/ Mama,Xenia

I'm not sure how reliable(sp?)Massie is(although I am sure he is quite reliable),I noticed that Nicholas' entries are much like what say,Anne Frank would write-paragraph(s)of what went on during the course of the day.Now moving on to Anastasia,(this is just me)I think that she'd write something like what her father would write-maybe a few little sentences like what was mentioned in N&A(the book).
(GD Anastasia)
DECEMBER 1
Awoke dear Maria this morning-how agitated she was,but she quickly laughed when she saw the cause of my excitement-snow!We ate, etc. etc.,then ran outside and skated.Quite a jolly day!

or

DECEMBER 1
Awoke at 7,woke up Maria
Breakfasted with Olga Tatiana Maria Alexei and Mama
lessons
went outside and skated

Their diaries were rather spare; but it is through the framework of our lives that we live, the day to day, that is what we live in. We don't live in the eternal. By understandig what they did day to day we understand them better, as well as their lives. Lives are interior, but exterior as well, at least for most. I think most people live through their daily life, but some are more thoughtful than most. They understand life through thinking about it. Except for Olga, and Empress Alexandra, I doubt any of the Romanovs were that way.
I am that way; for me life transcends the day to day. For Grand Duchess Olga it might well have been this way. But for Anastasia? No, she most likely lived life as it came, rather than in her thoughts. ;)
