Wilhelm & Sophie of Wied, King & Queen of Albania
Dimitri:
Does anyone have any information about this shortlived king? ???
Thanks! :)

Only from the biography of Mother Teresa of Calcutta!!
He was the son of Wilhelm of Wied & Marie of the Netherlands, & he married Sophie of Schonburg-Waldenberg. They had a daughter, Marie Eleonore & a son, Karl Viktor.
Wilhelm was born in 1876 & the major powers selected him as King of Albania following its independence after the Balkan War of 1913. He ruled only from February to September 1914 because there was much opposition to him from the Muslim population; and repeated attacks by Serbia left him in an untenable position - so he left but never actually abdicated.
He died in 1945.

An amusing little book based on the memoirs of Duncan Heaton-Armstrong, a soldier of fotune seconded to Prince William of Wied, who became the Prince [Mbret] of Albania. This ill-fated adventure was sort of doomed before it began and reading about the silly pretentions of minor German "royals" in a land that had no idea who they were is almost comical.
Aside from those tales, however, is the excellent introduction by the editor, Gervase Belfield which gives the background as well as the ultimate fate of the players in this ill-fated escapade.
Although Prince William and his wife, Sophie are rather uninspiring, Duncan is a good story-teller. Not quite as action-filled as the Zog story, but still a fill-in the chapter of the "Great Powers" imposing princes upon newly independent
territories.
Picture quality is not great, they are rare. I have a feeling that there are not many of this couple around.

Princess Marie Eleonore of Albania and Wied (1909-1956)
m. 1. (1937) Prince Alfred von Schonburg-Waldenburg (KIA 1941)
m. 2. (1949) Ion Bunea (1899-?)
She was the daughter of the short-lived king of Albania, Wilhelm of Wied, and his wife Princess Sophie of Schonburg-Waldenburg.
Does anyone know anything else about this princess. I read that she died in a Roumanian concentration camp. What led to these circumstances? I believe her second husband was a Roumanian, so they might have been living there.
Are there any pictures of her?
Thanks (in advance)
