Has anyone purchased a copy of "The Camera and the Tsars:  The Romanov Family in Photographs" By: Charlotte Zeepvat? I pre-ordered mine from Amazon in January and they told me today that it hasn't been released yet?! ???

It's been released and some on the board have the book. However, I am still waiting for my copy to be sent to me.

I truly liked Nicholas&Alexandra-The Family Albums by Prince Michael of Greece.Prince Michael wrote, that when he started to work on the book,he didnt think highly of Alex&Nicky . But in time,he came to care for them .I think alot of people have felt that way.I also like the great book,Tsar, by Peter Kurth.Another good  book is by a gent named Grabbe, whose father was a  member of the Romanovs court.

I just paid a visit to the library and borrowed the book from Crabbe's son. It's not bad, and has some lovely pictures of the family from about 1912 or so, and up to  the abdication.

I'm still waiting for my book from C. Zaapvet. :-[

Hi Louise !

I loved that Count Grabbe personally took the photographs. Although the places are familiar the shots have the sponteneity of the moment that is captured. Have you read Paul Grabbe's "Window on the Neva"?

I checked today at Indigo and they expect Charlotte's book to be in their stores by next week!!!!!!

Whew then. I should expect mine sometime in the near distant future--though I'm not placing any money on Canada Post :-/

I have not read, nor I have I heard about Paul Grabbe's book. Another one to go on my list of books to get.

Louise

P.S....Hi Joanna!! :D

Hello all.

I can't really add much beyond what's been stated.  Kurth's book is terrific, as is Prince Michael of Greece's compilation.  I also love The Romanov Family Albums (with foreword by Robert Massie).

Louise, I just received the new Charlotte Zeepvat via Amazon snail mail.  It is soooooo lovely (I love the smell of new books in the morning), and there are so many photos I have never seen before.  You will enjoy this one.  I hope it arrives soon!

Also, in a more general, beyond-the-scope sense...I love Before the Revolution (by Kyril FitzLyon), which has some incredible views of pre-1917 Russia, as well as Bob Massie's The Last Court of Europe--highly recommend both of them as full of that fin de siecle goodness.

I Just discovered Marvin Lyons' "Nicholas II The Last Tsar" on my bookshelf. I think I own way too many books! Anyway, there are so many rare photos. Especially at Tolbolsk! I don't remember where I got it or how much I paid for it but highly recommend it .

Mark, you are so right about Marvin Lyons' "Nicholas II The Last Tsar"...it is a treasure. Know what you mean about too many books (although I don't think that is really possible  :)).

I already have both of Charlotte Zeepvat's books "Queen Victoria's Family : A Century of Photographs" & "The Camera and the Tsars : The Romanov Family in Photographs", "Royal Cabinet Portraits of the Victorian Era" by David Cripps, "Royalty Before the Wars" by  William Mead Lalor. And 2 of Robert Golden's books.
SO!
Can anyone recommend any other books with portraits/photos of royalty?  ???
Thanks!!!

The Last Courts of Europe by Robert Massie and Jeffrey Finestone

King Michael of Romania

and there are some wonderful ones in various other languages, but with amazing photos and the captions are not hard to read whatsoever.

Art "The Last Courts of Europe" is a great book. One I forgot to mention that I have. Can you recommend some of the ones that are in other languages? BTW! When researching in my library for books on royalty your book on "Grand Duchesses" came up in my search, but I already have the book!

I have a nice one which I got when I was still a kid, called "The Golden Age of Royalty" which has lots of nice pics of Queen Vic and descendents - the ones of the Romanovs are well-known ones though.

The Golden Age of Royalty has quite a few mistakes actually.

Books in other languages include:

Leopold III - Mon Pere by esmeralda of Belgium
L'Album de Ma Vie, by Madame, the late Countess of Paris
Familia Real and Casa Real, on the Portuguese Royal Family
Mecklenburg-Schwerin, by Duke Cristian Ludwig of Mecklenburg-Schwerin

And many others.  A new one coming soon is In Memoriam: Empress Zita of Austria, Queen of Hungary
