Alexandra and Ella - social climbers?
« on: April 03, 2005, 04:23:54 AM »
Would the prospect of marriage to the richest men of Russia, and acknowledging their own petit-bourgeois background in the duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, have played a role in Alexandra's en Ella's decision to go and live in Russia? Would the obvious splendor of the Russian court have been key in their choise?

Alix was definitely not a social climber, I mean she didnt much care for balls, parties or gossip, and I truly beleive she loved Nicky and theirs was a true romance from beginning to end.
And Ella, well I think she loved her husband as well, and she wasnt that materialistic anyway as she gave it all up when her husband was assassinated and became a Nun who helped others.

If Alexandra hadbeen a social climber she would have accepted Nicholas' proposal immediately instead of deliberating for years.

If Ella had been a 'social climber' she would have married Wilhelm & become German Empress. The only way she 'socially climbed' was to climb down.... :)

Alix also rejected a match between her and Eddy, Prince of Wales - which would have made her Queen of England.

Princess Alix was an extremely shy and sometimes introverted person. She had a phobia in addition to strangers and crowds of unknown people.

She did know that after marriage to Nicholas she would be the vocus of the Russian high society and Empress of the richest throne on earth.
She even knew that her health - especially her legs - were not the best.
I think she was nuch more frightened than anything else...

One has to admit that with thier beauty Alix and Ella could each have been queens of either Russia, Germany or England but Ella married Serge over Wilhelm and Alix married Nicholas over Eddie. Alix could have accepted Eddie's or Nicholas's proposal from the start, but she didn't. Any other social climber would have jumped on either proposal given the chance

I really doubt that either girl would have known what a social climber was, much less be one. While minor, there were royals;and so knew that they were meant for,and going to ,a  higher place in society; if  they liked it  or not. Safe guess that the young Alexandra would  not have had any idea that she would climb to  such heights. Until  she became a widow, and took the veil, Ella enjoyed her adventures in society;though Im fairly sure that she didnt pursue them;  just went along for the ride.
