Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin,nee Windisch-Graetz
« on: May 02, 2005, 04:11:16 AM »
In the "Iberian Families' (Queen Maria Cristina's thread) was mentioned Duchess Maria Antonia of Mecklenbourg-Schwerin as a possible bride for King Alfonso XIII of Spain. I posted a picture of her and Marc asked about any info on her parents. I do not have much to say but I am much interested in Maria Antonia's mother and that is why?
Duke Paul Friedrich (1852-1923) , brother of Duke Friedrich Franz III and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna-elder, married for love in 1881 Princess Marie of Windieschgraetz (right spelling?). She was his cousin (her mother  Princess Louise of Mecklenbourg-Schwerin (1824-59)). For the love of Marie  Duke Paul Friedrich changed his religion to Catholicism and renounced the rights to the Duchy of Mecklenbourg for  himself and his children. The couple had 5 children:

Paul Friedrich (1882-1904),died unmarried
Marie Louise (1883-1887)
Maria Antonia (1884-1944), died unmarried
Heinrich Borwin (1885-1942), married thrice
Joseph (1889),died in infancy

Well, I read that Marie was a light-minded woman and after a number of years of her marriage she became very frivolous. Her family was forced to lock up her in some gloomy castle somewhere in Stiria. Marie lived there in a company of a pious lady-in-waiting, who was like a watchdog. IMHO it is a very strange story. Was Marie really locked up because of her frivolity??
May be there were more important reasons...for instance she had some mental problems? May be the Grand Ducal Family of Mecklenbourg simply did not like Marie over her religion.

In addition, I can not find any picture of Marie, photo or painting...
Here is Duke Paul Friedrich, spouse of Marie

As regards Heinrich Borwin here are his marriages (none resulted in children) so this particular line died out there. (Actually aren't both Mecklenburg lines (male) extinct now or soon will be?)

(1) m. 1911 (div 1913) Elizabeth Pratt of New York City (2) m. 1915 (div 1921) Natalie Oelrichs of Cheyenne, Wyoming
(3) m. 1921 Karola von Alers (married until HB died in 1942)

Two more photos of Duchess Maria Antonia (Marie Antoinette),  daughter of Duke Paul Friedrich and his "mysterious" wife Duchess Marie.

The pictures were listed on e-bay.

I am interested in Maria Antonia of Mecklenburg, the german princess that the Kaiser tried to push to Alfonso XIII to avoid so much english influence over Spain.
In the end she didn't get married and died in 1944 in Yugouslavia.

What's this princess story ?
Why didn't she got married ?
What was she doing in Yu during the war ?
Are there any pictures/photos of her available ?

Thanks in advance.

Marie has somewhat a stunning resemblance to Crown Princess Cecilie. Do you think? What would have been their relationship, first cousins?

Yes, they were 1st cousins. BTW, there is a photo of Cecilie, Maria Antonia and Crownprince Wilhelm together at the time of  Cecilie and Wilhelm's engagement.

A tricky question: Was this photo taken in a studio or not? The answer is surprising. ;)

Was it one of those done outside with just a moveable blank wall to use as a backdrop and a little carpet to place down? I've seen some of the 'zoom out' shots of those done with Queen Victoria and it's so funny to see the set-up.

Back to Duchess Marie of Mecklneburg ,nee Windieschgraetz.
Two years ago I started this thread on her and still no extra info except that Duchess Marie was a keen archaeologist and was working on a dig in Czechia before WW II .
Also 3 more pictures of her I've found recently. She was quite a pretty woman.

Here's a sketch of her as a fiancee
