Russia and the American Civil War

--- Quote ---Goods from Europe were considerably cheaper than those from the North, even after the cost of shipping and such. Therefore, southern states often purchased goods from Europe, putting considerable competitive pressure on American manufacturers to lower their prices and operate more efficiently.

Shipping was essentially free.  Once ships unloaded their cotton in Europe, they needed ballast for their return voyages.  Furniture and porcelain served that purpose at virtually no cost to the ship owner.

I am an avid collector of early 19th-century English porcelain, and to this day a remarkable amount of it still comes out of southern estates.  Interestingly, a surprising amount of New York federal furniture also still comes out of the south, especially that made by Phyfe and Launnier.  Well-to-do southerners obtained their furniture from England and France.  Really wealthy southerners favored New York -- perhaps a sign of the snob appeal of higher prices for the same quality.

Its odd and slightly terrifying that their could have been a huge war between the four. Union/Russia v Confederacy/France/Britain.......but if that war broke out then other allies would join in........*GASP* World War! But lets be thankful that didn't happen. ^_^

(so this was all before nicky's reign right?)
