I love photos of Tatiana, she is my fave GD because she's so mysterious, and in some of the photos she almost looks grumpy, probably because of her younger sisters antics. lol! I find it endearing

Those photos are wonderful, Arianwen. Though the entire imperial family was very attractive, I do agree with your statement that Tatiana was literally breathtaking. She was an incredibly beautiful young woman, who got prettier as she grew older.  :)

WOnderful pictures

Thank you!!

As has been said, I also believe that you had to see her in person to be able to admire her beauty.  Also, black and white pictures do not show what her skin and hair and eyes were like.

As for retouching, it was definetly done, there are some pictures where her nose looks completetly different...

What a relief! When I first saw the title of this thread I had a horrifying mental image of the lovely and refined Tatiana running around with a bone stuck thru her nose like some kind of savage!!  ::) I do think she was the most beautiful of the girls, altho all of them were lovely (and thank heaven none of them wore bones thru their pretty noses!!  ;D) but I suspect most of the different "images" we see of Tatiana's nose are due mostly to the angle of the camera and light/shadow effects. I do wish we had at least a few genuine full-color photos of the girls--I've heard their coloring described, but it's still hard to picture and also some of the accounts seem to contradict each other!  ???

I remember the memories of a wounded from the lazaret. He wrote Tatiana had a magnificient profil, but was not so beautiful "de face". That is certainly the explaination why so many pictures show her profil, not her face.

they used to touch up the photos all the time, i'm sure its been discussed somewhere on here, because tatiana's nose wasn't "fashionable" then, though i think its lovely!  :)

That first photo Helen posted sure looks retouched to me...

In accordance with Stacey, I am quite relieved to find that Tatiana did NOT have her nose pierced.

;)

I wouldn't doubt that Olga wished her "humble snub" was more noble in line as was Tatiana's. Remember too that Nicholas did not like his profile, and in fact that a well-balanced forehead, nose and chin always have been something of a concern for royals since they are often portrayed in profile. (Among modern royals, we know that Princess Diana would have liked her own "conk" to be straighter and less prominent.) The ideal, it would appear, was to have a graceful but somewhat imposing profile . . . and a nose that was sophisticated rather than turned up!

Tatiana was beautiful, very exotic, I am sure photos may not have captured her well, I think she would have looked better in colour photography, because I think she had great colouring.I think pierced noses in thos day and age pretty, but on of the grand duchesses, it would have been out of place. Not to mention, they may never have heard of pierced noses. I don't have a pierced nose, but it might not be that bad... ;)
