It was not hospital,it was Claridge's Hotel in London in witch Peter was born who had to be declared Yugoslav teritory in order to have dynastic rights...becuse every ruler of Yugoslavia had to be born in its teritory so they had to make it!

If Peter was born in London (I had thought it his son Alexander) does anyone know why Mignon was in England that close to her due date?

Are those Ella's emeralds or Miechen's emeralds.

I thought the emeralds puchased by Alexander of Yogoslavia for his bride Princess Mignon of Romania had originally belong to Marie (of Hess), wife of Tsar Alexander II Mignon's (Russian) great grandmother.

Are these the emeralds/tiara that ended up on Barbra Woolworth Hutton.

TampaBay

The cabochon (round) cut emeralds which ended up to be Mignon's were from Ella. GD Marie Pavlovna younger had inherited them from Ella and sold them to Alexander because she was in need of the money. So, it was Maria Pavlovna but not The Elder aka Miechen. ;)

The necklace is easy to identify though I think Mignon added the large brooch in the middle of the necklace.

The other large emeralds, faceted and hexagonal in shape were owned by Miechen. These were bought by Barbara Hutton who made a tiara of them.

How I wish these pictures were in colour!

You are so right! I got the 2 Maria P's mixed up. Bad enough to have the same name but also huge emerald necklaces.  ;)

Marc--don't feel bad (you're not stupid). We all make mistakes--see my above statement.  :)

You said it, grandduchessella! I'm actually totally confused most of the time about all the Russian grand dukes. But the jewels make the grand duchesses a bit easier for me to recognize. I must be a total material girl... ;)

I new there was something missing to this Emerald story.  Every time I read about 'the Russian Emeralds" the authors are always getting the "same" names mixed up with the "same" Russian GDs.

I think we all (especially GD Ella) do pretty good!!!

Correction. PETER was the King in exile, his son, the now Crown Prince ALEXANDER was born in Claridge's Hotel in London and the room of the hotel was declared sovereign territory of Yugoslavia

BTW. Alex and Mignon had a happy marriage and they had 3 wonderful boys. Mignon did so much humanitarian work for her people. She was wonderful.

Alex,

Alexander and Mignon were excellent monarchs and servants of the people.  Thank you for your posts.

You have every right to be proud of your Royal Family.

I would like to point out that TRH Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine have taken up the legacy of his grandmother and are presently doing much to improve the lot of the Serbian people. They left a comfortable life in the UK to do this, and I think the Serbian people have every right to be proud of them, as well.
