I was surprised by this picture. I didn't think Aleksandra would ever show her ankles, since she didn't think it was proper. But there she is, showing her ankles. I just thought I'd share to see if anyone was as surprised as I was.

What I mean is Alix behaved much more freely away from the Russian aristocracy, and generally people she didn't know very well.  I think she came across as haughty and aloof to many people, when really she was just too nervous to be herself.

For me Alexandra did not look stunning in uniform. It seemed she felt comfortless in all those military decorations.

Also, these photos were never meant for public comsumption.

These were private photos taken for private family photo albums.

I doubt she eve thought that anyone but her close family would see them.

As for sitting a horse, she would have been reviewing her troops just as Nicholas was doing sitting beside her.  It was a necessary duty for whatever regiment she was Colonel in Chief of.

It seems to me that in her youth, she had a pony.  At least a pony cart.  Most young women of her rank would have learned to ride.  Side saddle, of course.

Contrary to the topic, "Smiling Alexandra", let's send pictures where Alexandra looks sad:
