I really think they should have gotten someone to make her smile when they took her picture.  Everytime someone was about to take one, they'd be like "Smile, your majesty" or something.  She had a great smile that should have been used more often.

Yes, but you wouldn't want it to look unnatural.  Like posed photo-smiles often do.

And I've got a feeling the empress of Russia wouldn't have cared much for taking orders, even from polite photographers.

At any rate, smiling broadly with teeth showing was not at all the convention at the time. Toothy grins are a much more contemporary, American trend.

I'm not saying she should look unnatural and goofy, and I'm not saying the toothy grin picture was the best. In fact, I kind of was like,  "Is that even Alix?"  And may I ask what you have against contemporary and American?

Nothing -- I'm a contemporary American myself. My point is, the type of camera-smiles we're accustomed to nowadays simply weren't the fashion in Russia at the turn of the century. Victorians just weren't trained to smile for the camera.

Around 1907, 1908 - Undecided about the place, Finland or Crimea?

Finland, I'd guess.

Finland, I'd guess.

I agree -- the trees in the background look more characteristic of Finland than the Crimea.

Nice find, Shandroise, but now my happy-to-see-Alix-smiling moment is wrecked. Ha ha ha...  I'm glad i joined this forum.  So much laughter, entertainment, and knowledge has come from here.  Sorry this is off-topic, but I feel kind of crazy right now.
