Protestants/Catholics
« on: May 11, 2005, 07:59:27 AM »
Hello all once again,
I'd like to have a list of all the European dynasties with the religion of each one. If you wish to submit any comments that might help me, you may wish to do it according to Religion (as I'll do presently). It'll eb easier to count which are/were Catholic, Lutheran/Protestant, Orthodox. As there are no Jewish nor Muslim dynasties (I guess we can start off around the Middle Ages and thence), I don't think I'll get any answers to Jewish or Arab families. Please note I want dynasties that either reigned or had hereditary titles (not counting smaller lineages... I don't know... don't tell me that the Earls of whatever or the Coutns of wherever professed either this or that religion, I'm more interested in larger families). Hope we can all help each other! :)

CATHOLIC:
-Bourbon(-Spain)
-Bourbon(-France)
-Bourbon(-Parma)
-Bourbon(Naples and later Two Sicilies)
-Orléans (junior branch of the French Bourbons).
-Braganza and Braganza-Sajonia-Coburgo(Portugal)
-Braganza (Brazil)
-Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (Romania, till they turned Orthodox)
-Habsburg-Lorraine and Austria-Este(Austria-Hungary, Modena and Tuscanny)
-Wittelsbach (Bavaria); did Otto I of Greece turn Orthodox or remain Catholic?
-Savoy (Italy, Croatia)

LUTHERAN/PROTESTANT
-Hohenzollern (Brandenburg, Prussia and German Empire)
-Hesse (Kassel, Darmstadt, by the Rhine...)
-Schleswig-Holstein (and all its branches except the Greek Royal Family)
-Oldenburg

ORTHODOX
-Romanov
-Petrojich-Njegoch (Montenegro)
-Obrenovic (Serbia)
-Karageorgevic (Serbia and Yugoslavia)

I know there are tons more, this is just the first that came to mind :P Any help?

Albania (King Zog) is/was an Islamic dynasty.

Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (Romania, till they turned Orthodox)

Romania was always Orthodox.

King Ferdinand and Queen Marie agreed to rasie their children Orthodox so the first native born heir (King Carol II) would have the religion of his subjects.

King Ferdinand was a devout Catholic and Marie was a "middle of the road" protestant.  All their children were Orthodox and married Orthodox except Ileana who married a Habsburg Roaman Catholic-Arch Duke Anton.

I realize that the topic is of European dynasties' religion. But upon investigation of my curiosity, I realized that there are/were actually quite a few Muslim dynasties, worldwide. The branch of Mulim that I give is the majority of the country, but not necessarily the religion of the royal house.

Bahrain - Amir Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa is currently King - religion is Shiite Muslim.

Iran - House of Pahlavi - ousted in 1978 - religion is Shiite Muslim

Iraq - House of Hashimite - ousted in 1958 - religion is Shiite Muslim

Saudi Arabia - House of Saud - King Fahd bin Abdelaziz Al Saud is currently King, with Crown Prince Abdullah serving as de facto regent. - religion is Sunni Muslim

Jordan - House of Hashimite - Abdullah II ibn al-Hussein is currently King - religion is Sunni Muslim

Brunei - Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzadin Waddaulah is currently Sultan - religion is Shafi'i Muslim

Kuwait - House of Al-Sabah - Jabir al-Ahmad al-Jabir Al Sabah is currently King - religion is Sunni Muslim

Qatar - House of Al Thani - Hamad Bin Khalifa is currently Sheikh - religion is Sunni Muslim

Oman - House of Sayyed - Qaboos ibn Sa’id Al ‘Bu Sa’id is currently Sultan - religion is Ibadhi Muslim

Afghanistan - ousted in 1973 - religion is Sunni Muslim

Albania - already mentioned

Egypt - House of Mehmet Ali - ousted in 1953 - religion is Sunni Muslim

There are probably more, but those are the main ones.

The Coburgs of Bulgaria are also Orthodox.

Monaco, Liechstenstein, Belgium are Catholic.

The Ottomans of Turkey [also European] are Moslems.
And as for other Islamic monarchies: there are plenty to add. Including the 9 monarchies of Malaysia [one of whom is elected by the others every 5 years to be Head of State], the 7 monarchies of the UAE, Afghanistan- status unclear, dozens of Indian [former] monarchies, Libya, Tunisia, Morroco, Yemen, Brunei, etc.

What (not who) is the "Aga Kahn".  Is this "crown" a religious leader or royalty?

Zog's only son, Leka, is currently living in Tirana (Albania).
As has been noted, Zog the 1st--and apparently last (and Leka's father)--was Europe's first Muslim monarch.

Leka's son Leka II [big surprise there] is at Sandhurst now I think.
and the Coburg Bulgarians became Orthodox with Boris III.  This caused much discord with the Catholic families [especially the Italians] but Ferdinand did it for constitutional reasons. I think those differences are long settled now.

The Aga Khan is another peculiar case of hereditary leadership. Islam has no "ordained clergy" so he is not the same as a "pope" or "Dalai Lama" but he is the secular & spritual leader of the Ismaili Moslems [Imam] which are a branch of the Shia.
The family claims descent direct from the Prophet through his daughter Fatima and have the courtesy title of Prince with the qualification of Royal Highness from the British sovereign.

What about the Asian monarchies? Like what China used to be and Japan?
