Alice Heine, Duchess of Richelieu, the first American Princess of Monaco

She separated from her husband after he slapped her across the face in public view as they were leaving a theatre. She was having an affair, at the time, with a composer.

Alice lived in Paris and held many salons which the prince attended. She was an exotic character - a wealthy widow - who had many lovers - among them the Prince. He wanted to marry her in 1885 but his father refused his permission and so Albert waited until his father's death in 1890...and married her almost immediately.

I have always found just small versions of this photo.

Albert I of Monaco was a man of culture, he was the founder of the famous "Oceanographic Institute" of Monaco, and the "Institute for Human Paleontology" in Paris.

He also founded the "International Institute of Peace" in Monaco.

After his first wife left him and the second wife cheated him, he became a women-hater. But he was always at see. And the family of Mary made fun of him.

He was indeed very unlucky in love...his second wife, Princess Alice had a relationship with an English composer, right?...

Albert's lover, Caroline Otero (one of the most successful courtesans of her day being linked also with Edward VII, the Kings of Serbia & Spain and at least 2 Russian Grand Dukes), claimed he wasn't virile and suffered from erectile problems. Alice was rumored to have had an affair with Isidore de Lara, the English composer and singer. It was also rumored (I don't have any citation proof of it) that this caused her husband to slap her in view of an opera audience.

I read that in a magazine. After that, they divorced.
