You're very welcome Janet. I always had a hard time with QE since most of what I knew was based on Missy's recollections of her. They had an up & down relationship (to say the least!) and so there was a lot that probably wasn't expressed. There were also all the tales of how she basically sent Missy's father Alfred (when she was a contender for his hand) screaming out of their major meeting.  I'm still trying to get a handle on her marriage to Carol I. They were very different people--in just about every way imaginable. Yet, she seems to have been devoted to him and he (in as much as he could express) to her even though she sometimes aggravated him to no end I think.

With the above information I had provided, most of it was from some online info I squirreled away so it was just a matter of going to the right file and cutting & pasting the relevant portions. If I'd had to sit and type it all there'd probably be a lot less.  :)

:D Thanks to you both for all of the info!!! what a fascinating woman!!! sounds like if she was born today, she would be lauded for her accomplishments!!! I love learning about new historical figures, and I can always count on people on this board to provide!!!! And I hope that Aleksandra just worded that badly... >:(

Always wondered how Carol and Elisabeth's common life must've been. Things like Elisabeth being discretely exiled after the Vacarescu business are common knowledge, but still, i'm wondering how their everyday life must've looked like. A bit funny, huh?!

You are correct!  They became very devoted in a platonic way as only Royalty can.

I would say he was an excellent King.  He was very dedicated to Romania.  Romania was his sole reason for existance once he became King.  He expected the same from Nando & Marie.  This caused problems for Marie when she first came to Romania. at the age of 17.

But she learned his lesson well, probably better than any other member of the RF, later on.

i think carol 1st was an amazing king... since he was a constitutional monarch he couldn't do much but he did everything he could and he was dedicated to his job...

a great example of what a king should be...

not a too good example of what a person should be... i think he could have done with a little more tolerance... but his qualities as a king really compensate his faults as a person

edited to add: does anyone have any young photos of him?
