Thank you all for the beautiful pictures and info. on these Romanian Royals.  I'm just beginning to indulge my interest in the lesser known Royals of Europe.   And I am so glad to see others with the same interest!

Thanks palimpsest!  I think what I have found is that I didn't know as much as I thought I did!  ;D  But I'll have fun learning while perusing these threads.

The Steel Crown of Carol I, made with steel from a captured Turkish cannon after the Independence war of 1877

Romania became a kingdom in 1881 by crowning Carol I with this crown. Carol arrived in Romania [Walachia + Moldavia] in 1866 as was proclaimed "Principe" [head of state] and needed to go to Istanbul to be confirmed.

It is now in the National History Museum in Bucharest

A statue of Carol I in from of the Peles Castle, placed there after the fall of communism in 1989

It isn't well placed [my opinion] but the intention was good

Hello!

ilyala, you've posted that
''towards the end of his reign he became a more tolerable person, less rigid. he even started to gett along with his wife''
Didn't he get along with her. How was their relationship?
I was always wandering why they didn't have more children after their little princess died. Can someone tell more, please?

Welcome to the forum!

Carol was educated as a Prussian officer, very strict. He took his duty as a king very seriously and left little room for anything else. He made a "problem" out of the smallest thing, always thinking of the political consequences. This was beneficial for the country but not for his family life. Carmen Sylva had a very romantic nature, so different from her husband.

There are very interesting portraits of them in Queen Marie's [or Missy] book "The Story of my Life".

Is there any chance for someone to post those portraits?

I meant Missy wrote about them in her book. Sorry for the confusion. There are photos as well and I'll try to post them.

After the death of Carol I, Carmen Sylva lived near his tomb, at Curtea de Arges. After one year she died as well.
