Daniela
Welcome to the forum!

Carol was educated as a Prussian officer, very strict. He took his duty as a king very seriously and left little room for anything else. He made a "problem" out of the smallest thing, always thinking of the political consequences. This was beneficial for the country but not for his family life. Carmen Sylva had a very romantic nature, so different from her husband.

There are very interesting portraits of them in Queen Marie's [or Missy] book "The Story of my Life".

Thanks for the welcome and thanks for the information and for the photos. They are great!

On the front in 1877, as head of the Romanian army

Making a judgement on this picture and this picture only, Elizabeth of Weid was an attrative woman in her younger years.

Just read an article in Russian about Carmen Sylva...and now I am very glad that I can find info on Queen Elisabeth not only in Russian! I mean that the article is so...affecting and sickly-sweet! just a sugary panegyric!
I talk about it as I don't like one-sided views on any historical person.

Always wondered how Carol and Elisabeth's common life must've been. Things like Elisabeth being discretely exiled after the Vacarescu business are common knowledge, but still, i'm wondering how their everyday life must've looked like. A bit funny, huh?!

''being discretely exiled''

Why was she exiled?

She was exiled becouse of her role in Ferdinand's romance with Helena Vacarescu. She wanted F. and H .to be married but Romanians did not want . So Carol sent his wife "to take waters"...just for pacifying the public opinion.

Thanks for clearing it out.

When judging Carol I we must remember and take into heavy consideration that his one and only reason for getting up in the morning and for "living" was Romania.

Towards the end of his life, Carol I became very close to Missy and his wife Elizabeth.  After Carols I's death Missy went out of her way to patch up things with Elizabeth.

Ferdinand was always very close to Elizabeth.  Elizabeth's death affected him greatly.

Actually I can't judge Carol or accuse him! ::) I understand him and his reasons ABSOLUTELY. For sure I'll say an awful thing for Queen Elisabeth's fans : romantic Carmen Sylva was too much up in clouds and did not understand many practical things...So I am on Carol's side. ::)

BTW, TampaBay, it seems you said that your favourite book is "Last Romantic". I am too a big fan of this book and Queen Marie! ;D...I even have began to translate it into Russian for pleasure.

Sevetabel,

Yes it is!! I am a big fan of Marie "Missy", Ferdinand "Nando" and Carol II.  I have many cyber space friends in Romania and Serbia.  They all love Missy.

Are you translating from English to Russian?

Carmen Sylva was never "normal" after the death of her only child.  Losing a child is hard and losing an only child is even harder.  So I cut her a little slack & sympathy.
