I am bumping up this thread with a question - does anyone know how to make contact with Kate Anstey? I have some information about her grandfather, but she does not seem to post here anymore and I do not seem to be able to send her a private message...

You asked recently about the Soumarokoff-Elston family.
In reply...I am the daughter of Sophie Soumarokoff-Elston, grand-daughter of Michael Soumarokoff-Elston and Natasha Bellik. I would be grateful if you could tell me your interest in our family>

Hello

I don't know if the following lines are of any interest, but for the people interested in the life of Zenaide Bashkirov; daughter of Count Pavel Sumarokov-Elston, it could be. THis a copy-paste of my aunt's email sent almost two years ago:

"My one regret is not having maximised on the opportunity I had of knowing her better.  I was in my early twenties at the time with an irregular lifestyle as antique dealers.
For four years.in the early 1960s,  we rented a flat on the top floor of her large Victorian house in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, where she lived with her fat, pink skinned and red haired husband who drank too much and was often spied from above spread-eagle sobering on their lawn beneath our windows.  He was Irish and had been the first minister for health in Ireland...  I learnt years later that they had one daughter who was not normal and was kept in a mental home, never coming out to visit them.  When Zenaide escaped Russia she eventually settled in Ireland.  She had a brother who also settled in Ireland.  The only information I have about him is the scandal he caused at the time when he 'stole' and married the fiancee of a famous Irish comedian who for many years appeared on his own BBC television show.

She was quite small, her intelligent shiny black eyes, always alert,  reminded me of a monkey's.  Her hair was died a dark red colour and cut very short.  She was always dressed in black clutching a shawl round her shoulders and passionate about History.  Her whole demeanour was vibrant and I was fascinated by her.  Their library was a large lofty room with wonderful floor to ceiling bookcases on each wall.  She seemed forever in there, smoking heavily, surrounded with papers covered with her perpetual writings.  I felt quite close to her and she friendly towards me.  Once she gave me her book 'The Hammer and the scycle' which she had written and published about her personal traumatic life first hiding in Moscow (I think) describing the horror of starvation and her acute observations of the sordid life around her until a decision was taken to escape to the country and out of Russia.  She was young then, perhaps in her teens,  I don't remember much about the book, only that it was full of drama like when she described that it was her uncle who had killed Rasputin.  I often think of getting hold of it for it is for sale on the internet.  Perhaps I will before long for the wish to read her again and jolt my memory quite haunts me.

Before retiring to England her husband had collected good paintings.  In those days, they were a'plenty.  Our shop was always full of beautiful watercolours (to which I am particularly drawn) and no-one was paying much attention to them.   How things have changed since then.... Anyway, the young couple who rented our flat before us had accidentally set fire to it and the smoke and heat had damaged most of his precious collection.  He tried to 'restore' them himself...  When we left for our own house (this one) she wanted to give us some.  We still have two but we sold one.  I remember with regret being stunned when she offered us a badly damaged early Italian painting.  All we could see clearly was the most exquisite blue sky.  I was referring to its stunning beauty and she told me it was attributed to Leonard de Vinci.  I was so shocked I persuaded she should keep it and not part with it, however badly damaged was the rest..  What a fool I was... "

Hello BAL,

I have put some comments together here for you. They are only about Zinaida Bashkiroff Burke. There is no information about Ksenia.  I hope you can read it or have someone translate it for you.

This talks about what is written on her gravestone in Ireland.

Quote from: nedzere on September 19, 2009, 04:07:37 AM

On her gravestone it states that her father was "Captain Alexis Alexandrovitch Bashkiroff" of the 1st Rifle Regiment of the Imperial Guards of Russia, who died at the hand of the communist regime of Russia in 1936.

She wrote a book
Zenaida Burke wrote memoirs in the 1960s..."Sickle and Harvest" (Routledge & Kegan Paul?).I read them long ago and her love for her father and his mother (with whom she and her younger sister remained after her mothers remarriage & flight from Russia to Berlin) is v evident. One of the saddest stories is of her grandmother (herself a Princes daughter) watching the Soviets selling the livestock from her estate.
Finally the girls were able to leave Russia via Berlin to go to Ireland to be their old governess who had been earlier repatriated.
They heard from their father till the early 1930s when he disappeared (tragically no doubt into the Gulag).
When did Mrs Burke die?
The headstone says she died on 14th October 1996.

I hope this helps you. It is all so sad. I am sorry.

I also remember how when reading Mrs Burke's book the deep love for her father and his mother came through....and the harrowing story of her grandmother standing at the window all day watching the auction..
