a fan was painted  by I. A.VSEVOLOZHSKY  commemoring this ball, with the participants's caricatures. I think I recognize some people, but not all...

These were from lacquer boxes--I'm guessing they were from the ball. The one was marked Alexander III but the first time I'd posted these I was informed it was Vladimir since AIII didn't like to 'dress up'.    Too bad Ella wasn't married yet--I bet she would've looked lovely and there are so few pictures of her in her jewels.

Lisa, this is an amazing fan. I've collected fans for many years but I've never come across a picture of this one before - not even in the exhibition of Romanov fans held in London some years ago.

Do you know who owns - or which museum - holds this fan?  An amazing piece of history really.

I think this one and several like it are at the Hermitage Museum

Good Lord, the link's as big as picture! Anyway, if you go to their site and type in 'fan' it brings up many--including this one and ones similar to it. I was going to put the links but I didn't realize how long they were.  :-/

It seems to me that these photos were taken in the Winterpalace during the famous costume ball of 1903! and not 1883!

No they were in 1883--Miechen's costume was entirely different for 1903.

Forgive me for being a bit dim but was there a Ball (like the one in 1883, 1903...) for every emperor or what? It seems such a glamourous and high-class occassion... I can't begin to think how much those gowns weighed!
