Romanovs Balls (besides 1903)

I'm fascinated with the Black Ball of 1889.  Does anyone know what the Austrians did originally to offend the Empress?  If it was because they held a ball during a period of Russian mourning, which Romanov had died?

I also have found that there was an Emerald Ball in Anichkov palace of 1888
Everybody was obliged to bear a lot of emeralds.

Both Balls were arranged by Maria Feodorvna, I suppose.

This was the ball where Madame Paul Rodzianko, nee Princess Galitzine & through her mother heiress to a huge chunk of the Stroganov fortune was told by Marie that her emeralds made the Empresses pale !!

Another "royal person" in the picture is Duchess Elena of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, daughter of GDss Ekaterina Mikhailovna. Elena is just by GD Sergei's side. The others are friends and courtiers.

The men look like cavalry from the cowboys and indians era or "Roughriders" in US history, but the women look like they are recreating the 1800s. Does anybody know what the theme of this ball was?

Maybe I'm the only womn seeing this but I think the woman to the right of GD Elizabeth looks like Princess Zenaida Yusupov. The last man standing on the right appears to be Prince Felix Yusupov Sr. Maybe??

There is a post card where Zenaida is in costume and the hair piece seems to match.

Actually the women are recreating the 1770s years not the 1800s. The men look like the 17th cent. gentlemen.

I don't remember the theme though, need to check it up.

Sorry, I don't see a resemblance to Zenaida. Princess Yusupova had more clear features and distinguished appearance than that woman.

You are correct, "Svetabel," on the men's military attire.  The plumed "Cavalier"-style hats, leather knee-boots and leather glove/gauntlets, the large gorget-like metal neck protectors are 17th century in design.   Regards,  AP.
