To be honest, I suspect the joke must have been made about Tatiana. It must have been a personal attack. She doesn't strike me as someone who would cry at a non-personal offensive joke. Neither Tatiana or Maria would. Or Olga or Anastasia for that matter in my opinion. However, something personal that is rude and offensive would make someone cry, especially if they were in the same situation as the Romanovs were. Maria shows great fortitude in defending her sister's honour.

Yeah, it was probably about Tatiana. I should have picked up on that. I'm not so good at reading inbetween the lines.  :-/

Tatiana because she was beautiful, elegant devoted to duty. She was reserved but very royal, she knew who she was. Very Imperial. In whatever happened to her in later life she would never have forgotten that. She was unemotional, and got what needed to be done, done, and looked at life realistically. There are many reasons to be interested and admire Tatiana.

I think so.  Most people said Tatiana was the most  beautiful of the four girls; she was fashionably pale, had dark hair and gray eyes, and her eyes were oddly shaped and far apart with the Hessian features from her mother... she looked exotic and therefore more attractive to men, and was so tall and slender too.  I of course was not a big fan of Tatiana until recently as I amwriting a long sort of biography about her; she was interesting.  People think she was just the bossy one of OTMA, but at the same time she was unselfish in her desire to please her mother--but also used this to her advantage to manipulate, as I see it, to get things she or her sisters wanted since she knew how to keep cool and charm her way into a "yes" answer--and was a talented pianist and artist just like her older sister.  She also suffered a lot in her short life, falling in love like her older sister did, and him apparently loving her back... and Olga also having a crush on this man... as well as trying to calm her mother during all the anxious times from 1917-18.

I think that Maria is the most beautiful of the four girls. Whenever I look at Maria, I can never take my eyes off her. Tatiana, on the other hand, is pretty, but I think she's sort of plain.

I began by being fascinated almost exclusively by Anastasia--first by the mysteries about her (did she survive etc) and she's maybe still my favorite--love her droll sense of humor!  ;D--but as I began reading about the whole Romanov family I became really intrigued by Tatiana. First probably by the superficial--what I think is her extraordinary beauty and grace. I think perhaps Alixz captured my feelings about Tatiana best--that straightforward way of looking at life, coupled with that kind of "haunting, pensive" air about her--it's such a contradiction to me! And as Alixz said--I am ALWAYS wondering what on earth is going on in Tatiana's head! Oh, and another thing--thank you Georgiy for suggesting that that off-color joke may have upset Tatiana so much because it may have been something aimed directly at HER--that simply had not occurred to me but it does make perfect sense--of course she would have reacted like that to a direct and probably very crude insult!!

Tatiana was very intriguing, and indeed something of a contrast. She was undoubtedlly Alexandra's favorite daughter because she was practical and could be relied upon, and also because she was not very emotional. She was always focused on the things at hand. She was religious also, and so was Alexandra. She was not noted for being intellectual, yet not noted for having unserious attitude. Alexandra's attitude was serious too, although she could be very emotional. Alexandra's emotional looking on the dark side of life, was not Tatiana's way. I think Tatiana belived there was always a practical solution. It is indeed interesting how Tatiana was such a exoctic beauty and yet her character was bread and butter, very practical, oriented towards the day to day.  ;)

Yes, it is sad that Tatiana's life wasn't it longer. She had the traditional attitude of the Windsors, that duty comes first. With this attitude, she could have served Russia well, or perhaps a foreign country, had she married into foreign royalty. She was very practical, and would have made a great queen consort of a country.

In my opinion, Tatiana was the most beautiful one of the Imperial daughters.

Well, she isn't the most beautiful to me, but she was the most elegant, in my opinion. Just look at her photos, and that elegance!

For me the real beauty of the family was Maria, the special one, Olga ,and the joyfull one Anastasia. Tatiana is just a mistery to me...Maybe I can't understand her. She is elegant, that's for sure...

Each one of OTMA has something special that makes them stand out for me.  But imo what captures it most for Tatiana is something I THINK one of the guards wrote of her that she was every bit the daughter of a Tsar.  I think without knowing anything else about her, this comes across in her photos.  And while some might not agree that she was the most beautiful, I also think that the camera doesn't always capture what we see in person.  Just my opinion though. :)

i agree
you can't judge a person from what they look like

i think people do that alot with Tatiana.
unless they read her letters, poems, diaries they will never know the true and real person she is

but i must she she was elegant, she was truely an ugly duckling.
i was looking at pictures of her as a child, and then when she was a grown woman
she certainly grew into herself
but i must say that she might have had the hardest time fitting in, in my opinion.

but we will neverk know who she truely was unless we actually met her, as well as the rest of the imperial family!

Well, she may not have had the hardest time fitting in, but she might have been the most misunderstood. People might have taken her as being a rather boring, emotionless person, and thus might have misunderstood her. That might have made it hard to fit in, although people would have appreciated her practical and dutiful nature as well.

Hmm. I don't remember the joke being for Tatiana. But Maria was raised the same way Tatiana was, so I think Maria was just mentally stronger at that point.
I don't remember this directed at any specific GD.  It was simply off-color and even though OTMAA were prisoners, it was deeply offensive to them, being brough up sheltered and as some woud say arficially young.  Marie, even though raised the same as her sisters decided to cut the guard off and put him in his place, where as, imo Tatiana was unprepared for such off-color humour.
