Oh heavens Isabella's daughter, whos name I dont think I know, looks more like Ingrid than Isabella ever did, in my opinion.

Further proof that everyone sees things differently (and that beauty is in the eye of the beholder).  I never thought Ingrid was anything to look at, and Isabella, to me, looks very much like her mother.  Isabella's daughter however, has a much softer look, which is what makes me think she is prettier.

To stay on topic, I just don't know about any of them as Ella.

TJ. How lovely that Ella should 'make you want to be a better person'!   (Yes, I am being deliberately naive! :))

Isabella Rossellini, when younger, would have been good in the role I think, judging by these:

Nicole Kidman is a cheap Hollywood-manufactured blonde.

She is not a cheap Hollywood manufactured blonde, she is about my age and was acting as a child. I grew up watching her on TV programmes, I loved all the series she was in, and she always played a great role even as a child actress, then as she grew up as a teenager and still acted in television series and I suppose the Hollywood thing was something that was bound to happen. The TV shows she was in was far better viewing for children than what is on now for my kids to watch, Australia now has too much imported trash in my opinion, as I am now a parent, and deplore what Australian children now watch.

Back to topic, and I dont think Nicole Kidman would suit the role, or Streep either. I think like Bluetoria, it would have to be somebody new for this particular role.

The same is VERY sadly true in Britain.  :(

I am sorry to join this topic so late on -are they making a biopic or is this just a chat?
I have to disagree with Nicole Kidman as a possible Ella, although I did think that she was quite good in Dogville. How about Tilda Swinton - (sorry I have no photos of her.) she was in Orlando as the eternal hermaphroditic lead -a very striking face and a wonderful actress!

PS Ms Rosselini is also a fine option

wow Toria this is a great pic for comparing her to ella. Now that these have come i would say that IR is a better choice than Meryl although I dont find her to be a stunner, like her mother. My mother always thought IR was amazing looking. I mean she is but I just dint like the short hair thing she has had going on for a while.

I must say I think Tilda Swinton is not very attractive. I think I have only seen her in a few films (I know she is English) including the "Beach."

Also just a passing comment Nicole Kidman is in my opinion one of the most beautiful and talented actresses of her time.

I'm glad we agree, Prince Eddy!  :)

I saw Tilda Swinton in 'Orlando' & thought it was a most bizarre film, which I didn't enjoy at all....but then I don't really like any Virginia Wolfe (sp??) things (they seem rather pretentious to me...a lot of words pretend to be profound but that don't really say anything  :-/ )
I don't think she would make a suitable Ella at all.

I thought Nicole Kidman sang 'One Day I'll Fly Away' in 'Moulin Rogue' extremely well!

But yes, ultimately if anyone 'known' it would have to be IR who played Ella in my opinion.

I completely agree, bluetoria.  I don't think that Meryl Streep would be a bad second choice.  IMO - certainly NOT Nicole Kidman, then again - I just don't like her  :-/ ;)

I think that is a low-blow D.Olga. Nicole Kidman is quite an amazing actress really. If Nicole was really a manufactured blonde you would think she would have gotten a boob job. I think she is quite a respectable actress.

Anyway....  :-X

Thank you, Laura! As far as I'm concerned, Nicole Kidman is the bomb. She is a superb actress, every bit as good as Vanessa Redgrave, and only consistently underrated because she was married to that skunk Tom Cruise. IMO she'd make an excellent Grand Duchess Ella. She wouldn't even have to wear a prosthesis, as she did to play Virginia Woolf!

I'd go for Meryl Streep. Nicole Kidman just doesn't have any class.
