What about Amanda Peet? I know she does mostly comedy-type movies, but since we seem to be going off looks mostly, I think she does pretty well. Just take away some of the eye makeup, and she's good to go.

I like Nicole Kidman a lot. She has grown more as an actress the more serious roles she gets. But honestly, I liked her hair better when it was red. BTW, what exactly is her natural hair color? I've read that it's red, but in other places, it says it's blonde. I guess I always assumed it was red.

And how about Glenn Close ?

I think Glenn Close would make a really AWESOME Alix actress. I've seen a few shots of her that look remarkablly similar to the Imperial Jewel.

I agree that most actresses mentioned above are just fabulous. I love Meryl Streep and was really surprised to see how similar some of her facial features were to Ella. As much as I usually am for historical accuracy, I also believe being true to the spirit is much more important than presenting a copy of the original. Tastes change. Perhaps Ella wouldn't be considered the stunner she was nowdays, because of changes in taste. Instead of choosing an actress that looks identical to her, who may not at all appear stunning to the modern audience, we should pick an actress that evokes the same emotions in us that Ella did in her contemporaries. We hear she was stunning and very charming, at the same time graceful and angelic. Maryl Streep may have been all that in the 19th century, but no contemporary man finds her at any age a jaw-dropper beauty. Uma Thurman is a very good choice but she doesn't have the presence of Nicole Kidman. You often read about Ella that whenever she entered a gathering all eyes would turn onto her. Well, I think Nicole Kidman is the only well known actress who has that quality and is also the right age to play her. She is also a good enough actress to portray her elegant and graceful sides. But when a contemporary audience watches the movie he/she will experience the same feelings looking at her as the victorians did looking at Ella.

I agree with Johnny--looks would be important but talent and the ability to 'become' the character would be the most important factor. (I still am totally against Streep though).

I personally like Nicole K and think she radiates class and elegance. I can't see where she'd be considered 'classless' I know some find her a bit chilly though. She's definitely a red-head if you look at older photos of her and I too like her better that way--she looks a little washed-out right now.

I don't think Amanda Peet has the 'chops' for the role but w/o makeup she's still very lovely. I've seen her in some roles where she wasn't so heavily made up and she's got lovely eyes--an important Ella feature.

One of my faves (since she was on As the World Turns in the 1980s!)

Julianne Moore (she has presence and Oscar noms and looks great w/o makeup and in period outfits)

also Patricia Clarkson (well-respected)

and a 'newbie' Miranda Otto from Lord of the Rings

No...although she's very pretty she's not quite refined enough. It would have to be someone who was not only beautiful but also had a sort of 'halo' of spiritual/contemplative beauty about them. So far, I don't think any of these actresses do.  :-/

Courteney is awesome!  I worked on Friends for two seasons and she's one of the sweetest people you could ever know.  And there is something delicate and regal about her - Southern Belle that she is.  :)

No!...no!...no!...Not Emma Thompson - her voice is too awful!! She's nothing like Ella!
And not Miranda Richardson because she makes me think of Queenie in 'Blackadder" which was so side-splittingly funny!!  ;D
