To my eyes, Ilze Liepa looks a pretty good likeness for Ella, but she will need to leave off all the make-up to do the part properly.

She has brown eyes, however, and I have a suspicion that Ella's were blue.

Ann

Ella's eyes are said to have been greyish blue with a spot of brown in one of her eyes. :)

I've seen several photographs of Ilze Liepa and her eyes are definitely not brown. It can be difficult to tell with the abundance of photographs, but I suspect her eyes are also greyish blue - same as Ella's.

Perhaps it's the angle of the photograph, but Ms Liepa's eyes look more brown than blue there.

Ah well. some years ago an actor whose name I forget played Charles I, and made an excellent likeness, except that he was 6ft 2, whereas  Charles was about 5ft with bandy legs from rickets!

Now, can Ms Liepa act?

I'd never heard of Ilze Liepa until now.

Interesting, as she does not actually seem to have done much acting - last significant part in 2000.

Is she better known as a dancer?

I wonder who will play Serge - bound to be a very difficult role.

She has blue eyes as Ella's. Take a look:

Yes, I think she is better known as a ballet dancer.

Given that Ilze Liepa is 54 years old, could it be that the film will only be presenting the last period of Ella's life, a bit like Romanovy: Ventsenosnaya Semya?

As I read, the story will start in 1883 and end in 1918 with her death.

I found some news!
The director told about two actors of the movie:

The first is Andrey Merzlikin:

And the second Alexander Mikhailov:

There's an interview here, but it's in russian: XX

Ah! It’s especially at times like this I wish I knew Russian! Did the director reveal who they will be portraying?

Thanks for the updates! :)

Ah! It’s especially at times like this I wish I knew Russian! Did the director reveal who they will be portraying?

You get a good translation with Google Translate:

О чем-то мы спорили. Например, как преподнести тему ее отношения к Распутину. Там была нравственная дилемма. С одной стороны, она простила убийц мужа, но при этом считала, что убийство Распутина оправданно. И из-за этого у нее произошла ссора с сестрой, императрицей Александрой Федоровной.
=
We argued about something. For example, how to present the topic of her relationship to Rasputin. There was a moral dilemma. On the one hand, she forgave her husband's murderers, but at the same time she believed that Rasputin's murder was justified. And because of this, she had a quarrel with her sister, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna.

[...]

=
You are not filming a vita / hagiography.....

Alexei Barykin: Yes, that's right. We make a story of a living person. And it is natural that she is in something imperfect. And so her virtues are so obvious. Although it is possible that I will not raise the topic of Rasputin.

=
- When you studied the materials, what amazed you?

Alexei Barykin: There were several discoveries. In itself, the royal environment, the family of the grand dukes, is interesting. And for the first time I was seriously confronted with a discussion about the husband of Elizabeth Feodorovna, Sergey Alexandrovich.

On the one hand, this is a person who for many years historians have been represented as the descent of hell. And then suddenly the opposite view that it was the most holy man who built the temples and communed three times a week. And too many facts lead, it confirming. He founded the Palestinian Society. So many churches they were built in the Holy Land!

Nothing wrong with a movie with a strong religious focus, but it sounds like it's gonna be very tame and un-controversial, being filmed in tight co-operation with the church hierarchy and avoiding all problematic issues.

He didn't say who exactly these actors will be portraying, only that Merzlikin will represent the new Soviet, atheistic Russia, while Mikhailov - the old Tsarist Orthodox Russia.

This leads me to think that Mikhailov might be portraying GD Sergei, though I'm not sure.
