We must find a role for Annette Bening in this movie.  Rent Milos Forman's "Valmount" and you will see what I mean.  I see her as Michen (Marie Pavelona Sr.)!

"Fashion is so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash, we should stop going to the mall.

Meryl Streep as Ella
Jeremy Irons as Serge

For me they are perfects as actors and as resemblances.

Streep and Irons played together in the film "The wife of the french lieutenant". Both were splendid.

When the major characters of the movie version of N&A was cast in the 60s, both Janet Sussman and Michael
(?) were relatively unknown.
I fell in love with Janet's portrayal of Alix, but when I saw her at the Oscars, I couldn't believe it was the same woman.
Without make-up its is very had to make a decision on who would make the best actress or actor for the job.
I do love Jeremy Irons.
How about Julia Roberts for Ella?  She is versitile.

Apart from Isabella Rossolini, I can't see others in the role of "Ella". But she is too old for the role. In turns of looks, I think Monica, who appears in the "Bothers Grimms" with Heath Leger and Matt Damon will do as "Ella".

I think Cate Blanchard will be great as "Alix".
