Did  GD Olga ever meet Prince Vladimir Paley?
« on: May 31, 2005, 02:47:23 PM »
I was wondering if anyone knew if Grand Duchess Olga ever meet Prince Vladimir Paley?  I know they  both were at Tsarskoye Selo during the war at one point  while she was nursing and he was on leave.  I think they would have made great friends because of their  shared interest in poetry and writing.

I bet they probably did meet at one time or another.  In a letter to her father Olga wrote that she was reading "Volodya Paley's charming verses" or something like that.  Probably they only met once or twice as I doubt Alexandra would have approved of him.

Thanks Lanie and Michelle,
I did not  know that she got to read some of Vladimir Paley's poetry.  I know that  Grand Duchess Ella did not approve of the Paley's and their children so I guess Alexandra might not want the girls to socialize with them.  I do think they would have made at least very good friends and as Michelle said a charming couple.   More talent than most couples of the day....  I never could picture her with Grand Duke Dimitri. I had read that  a pairing with him was what her mother was considering at one point or was that gossip of the time?
Thanks,
Larissa

I don't think Alexandra pushed the match with GD Dmitri but I don't think at first (till Dmitri fell in with the more fast crowd) she would have minded a match. Although Dmitri was Nicholas's first cousin, N&A were more parental or uncle/aunt figures to Dmitri and his sister and unlike other Romanovs who usually couldn't get along with Alix, Dmitri was very close to the Imperial Family. A match would have made sense especially from a public relations point of view, both with the public and within the divided Romanov family. It would also have kept Olga in Russia (which she did not want to leave) and if Nicholas was thinking of making Olga a possible regent for Alexis replacing or along with Michael, having Dmitri by her side would have strengthened that position.

A match with Vladimir Paley would have been interesting. Unlike his half-brother he was not a possible dynast but he was a member of a reigning royal family so if Olga (or any of the daughters) would they have had to sign away their rights like KR's daughter did when she married the Georgian prince?

Olga probably did, he was a member of the family just not a fully royal one. Both Olga aand he had much in common, wasted promise among them. I think he was a few years younger than Olga ,more Anastasia's age. Olga and he would most likely have got along quite well, in my opinion. Does anyone have a photo Prince Vladimir Paley, because I have never seen one.  :)

Thanks for the picture ! Both Grand Duchess Olga and Prince Vladimir Paley were two young, talented members of the Romanov family. If only they had been given the chance and the opportunity to fufill their promise. What they might have given the world will always be mostly unknown. but forever wondered at. So sad. Prince Vladimir was a handsome young man.

He was born in 1897 - therefore closer to Tatiana's age. I believe that OTMA did see Paleys fairly often during WW1. Alix's letters mention driving over to Pavlovsk with her daughters and stopping by the Paleys on the way. Vladimir wrote plays as a young man and had his younger sisters act in them for a family audience - which might have included OTMA. He was working on a paly about the life of Lermontov at the time of his death - fellow prisoner GD Sergei Mikhailovich provided him with the necessary background information about life in the Cascasus.

You can´t compare Tatiana K. with Olga, as Tatiana was "only" the great-granddaughter of a tsar, so (after the changing of the family laws in 1911) she didn´t have to marry a prince of a reigning house. But as a daughter (!) of a tsar, Olga had to marry a prince out of a reigning house.

In memories of Princess Paley, it describes a liver in Mogilev, the Imperial Family  is coming hang tea with them, and that his children and children Imperial was much fun together.

The Empress appeared to have a friendship with Princess Paley, so I think if Olga N. and Vladimir P. were falling in love, the imperial couple would put any objection, especially as the Tsar and Tsarina had promised their daughter not to arranged marriages.

I think that this friendship only existed in the mind of the Princess Paley.

I think Princess Paley and the Empress were civil with each other from the evidence you gave, but not close friends. Princess Paley's marriage to Paul was controversial in the Imperial family and morgantic. It's unlikely Alexandra would have been extremely friendly to her.

They had some contact. But the Princess Paley is something overwhelming. You can check the online wartime letters of the Tsarina towards the Tsar and then you can read that sometimes Alexandra wanted that the Princess would leave her alone.

I also had a "friend" who was almost desparate to be my friend. But friendship has to grow.
